Well today I got rained out of work for the second time in a row. Tis a shame as I really enjoy walking through endless sorgum fields scouting for the introduced bengal day flower. Well, I do enjoy it when we scout the cow fields... I look extra hard for those little weeds in there . So I decided with a free day to go hunting again in the woods, same big park as yesterday. I got poured on which wasnt bothering me until I realized I had a digi cam in my pocket. Luckily I had a bag of herbs. Put the herbs in my cig box and put the camera in the bag. Weather? defeated! And here's your porn.
That was some swallowtails and sulfurs enjoying a pile of poo even more than we do, another of many chanterelles, a caeser Amanita, a common mycena, 2 types of stink horns growing side by side, and whatever that jelly one is. The highlight of my hike though was this huge chicken mushroom. The white spored variety are so colorful and amazing. I cant wait to go back and harvest that sucker once I decide on a recipe.

Hey, I think I've seen that same white chicken before... Not sure they taste so good when they get that big. Great pics as always. That chanterelle is great - gonna have to get me some of those!

You probly have LOL. Its on Reedy creek trail or maybe just one main trail off of it. At any rate it's only about a mile from the Reedy entrance still on a main gravel trail. Do you have personal experience eating this species or have you just heard that they are no good at that size?

No personal experience. Actually, according to the new field guide from Miller and Miller (one's a mycologist, the other a chef), "the edible polrtion of this polypore is the trimmed margin of the young pilei. It is important to use only the soft, yellow edges or it becomes bitter."
Let us know how you cook it up if you do.

Both species are delicious edibles- the chanterelles should be cleaned delicately and completely to avoid grit that can ruin the best edible on the planet (if you ask me). Sautee in butter for a few minutes. Add to eggs diced. Soups.... etc.......

The white pored chicken of the woods are the best I think. No doubt. I found some yellow pored ones before. Those things were just not the same. I just eat the white ones. They are possibly my favorite edible next to hericium.
Here are some of mine.
Thats some good eating for weeks!
Happy birthday!
