Question about gas exchange

My rye jars are taking forever to colonize. They have a quarter inch hole in the top of them covered with tyvek. Is this to small of a whole to provide for enough gas exchange? Could this be the cause for my slow colonization?

The TiT runs around 80 but has spiked to 85 when the weather gets up there. It's a peer and beam house so it doesn't insulate to well.
On a side note I shot them up on the 5th of this month.

If all else is within normal perimeters? Slow grain jar colonization is often caused by insufficient moisture content.

Without knowing for sure if your water content is off it wouldn't be advisable. Crack the lid loose a bit and see what happens unless it looks obviously dry of course.

Well this is my first time using rye grain and they did look a little dryer than I expected. However, when I shook the jars up a few pieces stuck to the glass which I thought indicated that the water content should be about right.
If I do loosen the lids should I put foil or coffee filters around the top first?

Just crack ther lids loose 1/4-1/2 turn no more and yes I like the foil for many reasons it will help hold in moisture as well as keep sporeloads off the lids (dust cover).

Next time, try an alternative to Tyvek such as micropore tape or polyfill-stuffed holes. If that Tyvek gets wet from the damp substrate, it will wick contams in and stop up your gas exchange. Tyvek's for sending spores in the mail, not growing them, IMHO.

Well what I did was drill a quarter inch hole and then cover it with small round pieces of tyvek that I got via a 3 hole punch that I held in place with micropore. I basically inserted the tyvek in there to keep the grain from sticking to the micropore. Should I just place a piece of upside down micropore on the hole and then tape over it? So that way no grain will stick? Or is a quarter inch hole small enough to not be worried about that?

Anyone have any further thoughts on this tyvek vs micropore discussion?

Tyvek allows for great gas exchange and has worked fine for me and is what I prefer with jars but I also use micropore tape and polyfil each having their own unique benefits with different applications.

i like tape because i can't get hold off tyvek (yet)
and is also handy,
i have one hole on the complet metal cover of the jar [1/4 - 1/2 inch diameter] (one peace cover) and i tape it twice, once i get the jars out of the PC, and the second time when i inoculate. i also scrub it a bit with alcjolol dipped paper towel.
I have my jars 100% colonized after 6-7 days with 2 shakings
just info on my metod with LC and rye

Well I have moved over to plastic lids so tyvek alone doesn't really seem appealing anymore. When I cover the hole with tape should I be concerned with the sticky side facing down over the gas exchange hole? Will grain touching this while shaking be detrimental in any way? Or is it more detrimental to double up on that hole like I have been doing by taping over a small piece of tyvek?
