How to make a reusable plastic filtered lid **pics**

Hi Everyone, I was sent some pics of a style of lid that an edible mushroom farm uses. I thought I'd post it in hopes that someone will find it useful. -------------------------------------------------------------
Here's an easy and simple way to make plastic filter lids. They don't rust, warp or go bad. Easy to clean and easy to use.
1. Grab a hold of a few 50mm synthetic filter discs . (You can really use any size but if you're not in the mood to cut anything the 50mm size works best).
2. Drill a 1 inch hole on one side of a plastic canning jar lid . On the opposite side drill a small 1/8" hole (this is optional, this hole is simply for liquid inoculations).
3. After the holes are drilled, smear some contact cement around the edge of the larger one inch hole. You don't need a lot, just enough to make a full circle around the hole. Be sure not to leave any spaces or gaps in the glue.
4. When using contact cement you need to place the glue on both the plastic lid AND the filter itself. Since the hole is one inch and the filter is almost 2 inches, this will give you a 1/2" space to smear contact cement onto the filter.
5. Lay the filter (with the glue side up) sit for 15 minutes and let the plastic lid do the same. These times may differ depending on the kind of contact cement you use. Read the directions on the bottle.
6. After the time has passed, carefully place the filter over top of the one inch hole. The glue on the filter should touch the glue on the lid. This will make for an EXTREMELY strong bond. Since you didn't leave any gaps while smearing the glue, you'll have not only a strong but airtight, dishwasher safe, pressure cookable and autoclavable lid.
That’s it!
We have tons of these style lids for our spawn runs. After we pressure cook them or wash them with a bleach/water solutions the yellow contact cement will turn a brownish color. We have some lids that are over 4 years old and look brand new.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hope this helps some of you who are tired of rusty lids

I have read that when the synthetic filter gets wet, its an invitation for contams...
for example, when you finish PCing and have to shake your jars to distribute moisture... this may wet the filter disc and cause a contam....
can someone else verify this?

add a little silicon to the injector port and you've got a nice lid.

This is unture. When pressure cooking, the filters do get wet but they steam dry. Synthetic filter discs have been used in the mushroom growing industry for decades.
Also remember, if there's no nutrients available contaminates won't grow. The filter is sterile once it comes out of the pressure cooker, the water that is on the filter is sterile and the hot air surrounding the jar itself quickly dries the filter.
Now if you don't clean your filters you could have problems so you should clean them after every use.

Would the same idea still work with metal lids?

Yes they will. I use silicone on my lids instead of the contact segment tho. My tek is in my journal, have a look.
