Banks have to file a transaction record (CTR) by law on anything that's over $10,000 USD, and it goes into a national database that is searched by the FBI, et al, for transaction patterns...

They are also supposed to file reports on any suspicious activity (e.g. six deposits in a month of $9,000 cash), as that is known as "structuring" deposits...

I just went and looked it up. Additionally...

Any cash transaction where the customer seems to be trying to avoid BSA reporting requirements (e.g., CTR, NIL). A SAR must also be filed if the customer's actions indicate that s/he is laundering money or otherwise violating federal criminal law. The customer must not know that a SAR is being filed. These reports not are filed with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network ("FINCEN").

In other words, when you get that suspicious look from the bank-teller, there is a reason for it, but they'll deny it if you ask about it. They are like doctors now, they are locked in an unholy alliance with the federal government. It is truly them against us...

After all; if you use cash instead of credit cards then you must be a terrorist or a drug dealer; if you need pain killers from a doctor then you must be a drug addict; if you question the war in iraq, then you must not support our troops...

Seriously, don't get me started... :smirk:

It depends on how you look too. If you look like you might be a druggie or a terrorist, then they're more likely to take note of you. However, they are pretty much suspicious of anyone dealing in cash anymore; anyone who doesn't have an active merchant account with them, like the owner of an obvious business that deals in some cash like a store or a restaurant...

One of the "benefits" of this credit/information revolution, of the last thirty years, is that "they" can track us better. One of the concerns is exactly just that. We are slowly loosing both our privacy and our freedom, but it comes sugar-coated with so many candy-colored goodies, that we willingly embrace it...
