3 cakes were placed in their terrarium over 2 and a half weeks ago. The cakes were fully colonized. But there are still NO shrooms. I have done this before, and they came very quickly..
There are not even any pins or abhorts...

they are PF, and PES Hawaiian

you can try doing a cold shock. Do a search for the details but I believe it is when you put the cakes in the fridge for 6 hours before you fruit. And you want to increase the air exchange. If nothing like this works then you have one of two things.

1. you have a contam that is causing your fungi to not fruit. green mold has been known to do this.

2. your cake simply wont fruit which means I would try and get a new line of spores to work with. Just bad luck. Maybe try a different substrate next time if you can't get a new strain. I would wait another week and a half before I gave up. Just try increasing the amount of air, humidity, or light to see if it helps. Make sure you are careful and don't hurt it too bad.

Another potential problem is from a condition called overlay. This is when a skin of dead cells forms along the outside of the mycelium that makes it unable to fruit. Try scrating it with a fork or casing it. Good luck and try and give some more details if nothing works.

Well,

I'd inject 10 cc of water into each cake.

Or dunk them.

They might just be a little dry.

And what is your temp and humidity?

actually 3 weeks is not unheard of if conditions are not optimial ,you guys are probabally scaring him... patienence is definitley a virtue... if you dont have your humidity and temp right get it right and re-hydrate the cakes, id dunk half and inject the other half

Roadkill,

With respect, you can't really "inject" water into a cake. Although the matrix of a cake is inherently porous--its ability to take in water is nill.

If you were able to depress the plunger on a syringe stuck deep in the middle of the cake, most of the water would make it right out of the hole the needle created. The other small amount would not be effectively absorbed into the cake to rehydrate it.

It's a great idea in theory. . but doesn't work unless the cake was pre engineered (a vermiculite cylindrical interior made with a wide drill bit) to accept water.

The best method is to get the ratio of water right before cooking the substrate, and then not to overcook the cake.

Last case scenario. . .the Hippie3's dunk tek can invigorate a dried cake.

ChangLee,

I do this all the time.
Don't tell me I can't inject water  into a cake..... I do it all the time.
Do i need to bring up the Voodoo Tek ?
I think Hippie made the Voodoo Tek too...if you do some reading.
Do i have to make a home movie like Hawk ?
I inject water into several spots into the cake.
It does work...end of subject.
People are amazed at how much my Cambodians fruit.... I injected them.
I guess having arms bigger than a toothpick surely helps.
If your cakes are as hard as a  rock.....that might be a problem.

CaptMax..bless his heart posted his cake mix.
And i have been using it sucessfully....btw
2 cups Verm
1 cup Brown Rice Flour
1 cup of water
This mix is on the wet side....but it produces great flushes !!!
They come out at birth.....nice and fluffy.
IMHO....the cakes from the PF tek are harder.

Oh well......guess you will have to try it yourself.....huh
Start lifting those barbells!!!!

You can inject water into the cake (obviously) and if the cake is dry it can help.  However, you have to realize that by injecting your cakes you are increasing your risk of contamination.  If your operation is fairly clean and you don't have many cakes contaminate, then injecting those suckers with water will probably increase your yields quite a bit.  If your operation is not clean, and you are already losing two out of every three cakes, then injecting them with water will probably cause you to lose whatever is left.  All opinion...

I too inject water into my cakes! contamination really isnt too much of an issue, ive never got contamination while injecting, and the threat is less with a colonized cake anyhow. but i soppose there is still a threat.

I've read that the real threat is that the contamination would start on the inside and cause the shrooms to be toxic while undetected.
Question Roadkill, What size needle do you use? I've tried injecting on a couple of different occasions since we spoke about it and my needle keeps stopping up.(18 ga)
One day it kept stopping up about every third poke. So I'd thump the plunger with the palm of my hand to shoot the peice out. Well the last time it was really packed. Took about three good thumps. Well it was a luer slip, and you guessed it, shot across the room and stuck in the curtains. Did I mention sometimes I'm dangerous to work around?:peace:

Well,

I use a 20cc syringe....with a 18 (ga) needle... 1 1/2" long.
I too have had it get stopped up....just a few times though.
I clean the needle out with a sewing needle.
Squirt several syringes full of water out of it.
Then flame the needle.....and wipe it with alcohol.

And then i continue on to the next cake.

*safety note*
I did have a needle shoot out from back pressure right into a cake once...lolzz
So i don't think it would be a good idea to try and look at a clogged needle while trying to clear it out....might get a needle in your eye or face.

I haven't had a cake contam from injecting water into it yet.
