How the Fly Agaric got it's name
    #572946 - 03/07/02 09:16 PM (22 years, 17 days ago)

"Amanita muscaria is called fly agaric because when the mushroom is broken up and placed into a saucer of water, house flies are attracted to the solution, drink it, buzz around in frenzied loops, and then die" - some website

Just thought there may be some who are interested as I've seen the question posed many times without reply.

The fly agaric mushroom of course is sprinkd in with some sugar. The flies are then attracted to the mixture and come down to feast. In a few moments the fly falss unconscious to the floor and the cleaning person could then swat the fly. I should point out that the fly agaric potion did not kill the fly but rather stuptified him. If left alone the fly would awaken in a few hours and buxx off.

Flies also are associated witht he devil and dead things and its asociation with this mushroom gave it the name Fleigenpilze or fly agaric mushroom.

Read Wasson's book Soma: The Divine Mushroom of Immortality co-authored by Wendy 0o'Donahue Flaherty,

I will post a list of the names of the Fly Agaric for you below in the next post.
