Finding a quality Hygrometer for cheap

Is this possible. I've heard that it's best to avoid the cheaper plastic ones, which is what I have now. It doesn't seem to want to go highr than 75, when I'm pretty sure the humidity is well over that.I've seen $5 metal and glass ones used for cigars, but it must be crappy at that price. It's like they are either 5-$7 or $30-$150. I'd drop $20 on one if I knew it worked well, but $30 + seems ridiculous. Anyone have a suggestion?

Just make sure it can be calibrated and you're good to go. Cheap ones will need to be recalibrated more often. RR

Well I asked this a long time ago, but better late than never. I'm probably due for an upgrade, so thanks. This is what I'm using now (http://www.jrcigars.com/index.cfm?page=accessories_detail&ItemCode=3HDC&type=HMF)and it CANNOT be calibrated. It seems to do good, but how do I know, right?

I got that same one on ebay for like $8. It worked perfect for almost a year, then the moisture got to it

I prefer the Masons type hygrometer agar recommends, there is no way it can really be wrong unless you allow the water reservoir to dry up.
It's very important for some of you newer cultivators to understand don't buy a $50 digital RH gauge (that will break anyways) because once you get your settings all dialed in you will forgot you even have one and hardly look at it.

there are a few ways to know actually.
salt test: take a ziplock sandwich bag, put a tablespoon of salt in it. use a syringe or dropper to moisten the salt. just a few drops will do it. enough that the salt is wet but there's no extra water. put the hygrometer in the bag, seal it shut and leave it a few hours. should read exactly 75%. if it reads 70% for example, you know you're off by 5%, and just mentally add 5 to any readings you get (or, for those who can calibrate, do so, so that it says 75%!)
a slightly less accurate test, but one that will tell you if your particular hygrometer indeed will go the long haul all the way to 100%, is to take a towel. get it soaking wet... not dripping (especially not if you're testing an electronic one... drops of water inside electronics is usually not good )... but plenty damp for sure. wrap the towel around the hygrometer and wait about a half hour. should read very near to 100%. if it only gets up to around 80 or 90%... you got a cheapo hygrometer that aint gonna cut it for mycology purposes where we deal in humidity over 90%
