Myths & Religion

I recently watched Bram Stokers, Dracula, and was recommending it to a friend. We began discussing how the movie portrayed Dracula. What he was, what he wasn't.
And it dawned on me. We think of these mythical characters as if they were real. "What could Dracula do, what were his powers" We have given this mythical creature a life of it's own. The legend of Dracula has some historical truth to it. The story of Vlad the Impaler. Did he really have mystical/magical powers?
No.
The myths surrounding most religious characters (Jesus being the primary one) are very similar.
These stories of Jesus, were based on a real person, but did he do all that he was said to have done.

I think you are correct.

I've hallucinated people having fangs, actually more than one occasion, I've also heard of people believing in vampires in real life, I can't understand why someone would actually build a cult around these speculations, its likes the Bigfoot myth, it continues to grow until its widely accepted. Although I think I saw big foot once myself. So I kinda entertain that one myself.

Right on, and furthermore I'd add that much of the paranormal and psychic capabilities Jesus was said to have could be just hyperbole or metaphor, or perhaps it is literal and Jesus was a very powerful Yogi.
Either way I think people tend to make a mountain out of a mole hill with regards to religious figures.

This is an assumption, and you present it as a fact.
If you said: same way Jesus MAY have been a man without powers instead, this would be a valid post. Otherwise this is abuse of logic.

I recall a vampire running for govenor of Minnesota recently.
Quote:
news Vampire goes for governor
Voters in the US state of Minnesota may find a self-proclaimed vampire on the ballot for the office this year.
Jonathan 'The Impaler' Sharkey says he plans to announce his bid for governor today on the ticket of the Vampyres, Witches and Pagans Party.
"Politics is a cut-throat business," he said.
Eight years ago, Minnesota elected a former professional wrestler, Jesse 'The Body' Ventura, as its governor.
"I'm a Satanist who doesn't hate Jesus," Mr Sharkey said.
"I just hate God, the Father."
But 'The Impaler' says he respects all religions and if elected, will post "everything from the Ten Commandments to the Wicca Reed" in government buildings.
Mr Sharkey has also pledged to execute convicted murders and child molesters personally by impaling them on a wooden pole outside the state capitol.
He has told the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper he is a vampire "just like you see in the movies and TV".
"I sink my fangs into the neck of my donor... and drink their blood," he said, adding that his donor is his wife, Julie.
Mr Sharkey says he is announcing his candidacy today, on Friday 13, because that is his lucky number.
The field for the governor's race in Minnesota is far from complete.
Republican incumbent Tim Pawlenty is widely expected to seek another term in November and his Democratic opponent has not been determined.

Also, to see an interview with the guy (which is hilarious, by the way ), click this and scroll down towards the bottom of the page, and there will be a link for the video (couldn't find any other way to link to the video itself).
Peace.

The best part is where he says that, when he is president, he is going to have George W. Bush impaled, and rants about Bush being a Communist in the Oval Office...
Peace.

They are only real as we think about them in our minds. Our ideal world. The greatest world of all if it corresponds to reality.
