vermiculite instead of perlite in fruiting chamber
    #568886 - 03/03/02 05:50 PM (22 years, 21 days ago)

I have been thinking about putting a 1 in layer of vermiculite on the bottom of my fruiting chamber instead of perlite. for the majority of my cakes i set them on top of a lid full of vermiculite anyway so what do you think? could possible make flushes twice as big. i know this could lead to contams but if i were to change the vermiculite after every flush i could get away with it. tthink the verm could make enough humidity? or is this a very bad idea?

It seems to work, but, I wouldn't change it after every flush. I still think perlite would work better.

well the verm layer at the bottom is going to act like a big ass casing to set the cakes on. perlite wouldnt be good for this. verm would be more at risk for contams than perlite. so i would nbed to change it every flush or so.

yes yes you would but for safety sake..... and your own unmiserable ends do this..... get a smaller tub and only use one or two of your cake sin it........ if the first and 2nd flushes are bigger then the ones on perilite change it over.....

safety so as to not lose all your cakes man........

but you could just PC a big arse bunch of verm

Your set up might be lacking in humidity without using perlite to wick moisture into the air. Get a hygrometer to test the conditions. As you know, with cakes you're going to need humidity very high.

I am not sure about verm used for humidity. But I do not see why not, if you have verm mixed with perlite, that should dook, but I have not tryed it. If I do not have perlite, I use a mix of 50% peet moss and 50% Green Moss, this makes a grate humidity setup, it does work, but the down fall is when the cake decides to grow on the peet and green moss used for humidity. Hay you get one hell of a better yeald, but you have to buy a fogger, with a timer wall plug that you would use for a christmass tree. also to help out this process of air exchange, if you take good percautions when opening your tank you will not get contam, but just build a hepa system with 2 air pumps to help with the air exchange.

yes, i know all about the conditions a cake needs to thrive, and i have a hydrometer. im not worried about humidity, with al that verm and my spraying the walls i can keep up the humidity. i am typing this reply now so i cant se who suggested it, but i will get a container like you sugested and put 3 or 4 cakes in the container of verm.

thanks for the sugestions guys
