What the hell is this?
    #5669641 - 05/24/06 06:15 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

These things have been popping up wherever I've planted poppy seeds recently. It sure as fuck doesn't look like a poppy to me, though!

It seems to be hardy, and grows fast.

I can't figure out what it is, though. I've never seen anything like it grow in my area before, so it's not likely to be a local weed.

Anyone have any idea what this is?

Not a clue.

I have noticed a lot of odd hitchhikers in all types of hand harvested seed.

Looks like Lambsquarter (Chenopodium album). I used to eat it when I was a kid, tastes like spinach.

Well, in that case, I may have to transplant a few of them and keep them in another empty plot of dirt. Right now they're occupying my prime poppy location... I'd rather they be placed somewhere more shady... I'm sure they'd still do fine there, but I'd rather free up the space for teh 0pium

lambsquarter is hardy and fast.  and although i cant tell if thats what it is from the pictures, the younger leaves are usually powdery colored.  the young growing tips look alot like the resinous pot leaves with little trichomes on them.  Usually the leaves will have different tints as well, like purple.  or atleast thats how it grows here where i live, a continent away from you  actually, a fOAF lives in the midwest, lambsquarter grows there and probably where you are as well.  it tastes like spinach, good for you too.  also known as Orach.  hope that helps

I had noticed that the leaves looked like pot leaves covered in trichomes. Sounds like we have an ID then.

Of course not...

but the trichome-like appearance is characteristic of the plant that was being described.

I was expecting it to turn out to be a useless, albeit delightfully symmetrical weed.

But instead it would seem that it is a nice, edible plant. I'm pleased with this... I accidentally planted a vegetable crop.

I've had a lack of greens in my diet recently, too. Delightful coincidence, this is.

These things are rampant in my moms backyard!

Do they really taste good?

Although i think she sprays them with weed killer, yet they dont die.

So doubt ill be trying them from her yard
