 My Cars Check Engine light came on.....

It came on about a month ago and stayed on for a couple days (like 50 miles of driving). Then it went off and i figured it was an anomally.
But it happened again the other day. the light came on and stayed on for 2 days. I drove maybe 40 miles. then today i go to work and the light didnt come on.
I checked the fluids and there good. The car drives fine too. Its an Explorer with 100,000 miles on it btw
so yea what does this mean? think i should get it checked out?

It's a Ford, so I'd get that checked out ASAP.

i'd say check it out... have the guy throw it on the machine, he'll charge you 0-40 for that.. it's most likely a sencor or something stupid... sometimes lights just come on every so often just to remind you to preform routeen maintaince...

probably some kind of sensor... theres no way youd be able to diagnose the problem since cars these days have a shitload of electronics.... if youv checked all the fluids theres nothing else you can do unless you can hear a wierd noise coming from the engine....

That happens to old cars all the time. My lincoln town car was at around 200k miles and its "check engine" light was always on but the engine was perfectly fine. My second two car had around 100k and the same light went on and off sometimes but the engine still ran perfectly fine, never had to get it towed or anything.
You can go talk to a local mechanic and just ask him about it, hopefully he will tell you that its nothing or he might charge you money to check your car.

go to your local autozone, they will read the codes with their obd2 scanner for free for cars 1996+,
for older cars they use a "key" and read the codes manually
The light means one of your sensors has triggered specs out of normal range

Or your gas cap could be loose, that causes my check engine light to go off sometimes.

Ive had my check engine light on for the last year and a half... i think its cause i need a new radiator cap or something 
check your gas cap and the connections to you radiator cap, etc etc. also check all your fluids, etc and look for leaks.
although, i think the only way to get your radiator cap checked would be to know something about car wiring... 
if you still can find nothing wrong, then reffer to what hella_tight said.

That's solid advice.
I would have said it's no biggie. Most of the time when my friends' check engine light has come on, they take it to get checked out and it turned out to be nothing major... most of the time nothing at all.
Do what ChromeCrow said though.

100k miles... my guess is going to be a failing oxygen sensor. As others have said, get it checked sooner than later.

I have an 85 fifth avenue with 400k on it ,, from what I understand the check engine light has been on for 15 years

My car's check engine light comes on every time the engine backfires, it doesn't happen alot, but it does. It's more of a record process than it is a warning. Could be something that simple. Go get it read at autozone like the others have said.
