Do cakes rust??
    #5608656 - 05/09/06 12:49 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So most of my cakes are damn near spent. But Iv'e noticed a tan/ brown color on the top of most of them that closely resembles rust. I dont think its a contam because there has been no adverse affects to the mushies. Has anyone ever heard of cakes rusting or do they just turn that color at the end of their lifecycle? Keep in mind that it is only one tha top of the cakes. Maybe too much moisture builup in them?

I have seen that before..... I don't know specifically what it is or what causes it but lemme see if I can find some pics, and tell me if its what you're talking about.

*disregard the puss bubble, the rust colour is what I'm posting for*

Yeah, anything similar to those pics?? Oh yeah, Mushrooms/mycellium definitely do NOT rust. The colour may be apparent, but no literall rust will occur.

Yea, its alot like the first pic. Interesting. But they still keep pushing out a mushie hear and there. Hopefully it doesn't have any negativa affects

Hmmm....  well I'm not going to tell you that it is nothing to worry about.  I do believe it is a contaminant, whether or not it causes detriment.
A cake is expected to contaminate eventually.  If it's on it's 2nd or 3rd flush I'd say lay it to rest in the backyard, it's time is done....

Go bury it in your backyard in a shady spot with about 1/2inch ground cover above the cake.  Give it a few rains and some time and you never know, you might get lucky  ::shrug::
Or just toss it.  I wouldn't risk contominating your grow area, so whatever you do, I'd say get it out.
good luck
