Looking for information on freeze drying

How does one go about making a freeze drying chamber.
I know the standards are American Harvest Food Dehydrators or Fan and desiccant combos. But the idea of Freeze Drying appeals more to me for personal reasons. Something about how pristine and unchanged freeze dried goods look.
Anyway, does anyone know anything about the process of freeze drying, dry ice is easilly obtained where I live and is very cheap.

A friend of mine mentioned using a dry ice chamber to freeze dry which prompted this interest. If it ends up being beyond my means oh well, if it is indeed as easy as some dry ice and the proper set up, great!

this is what i found out about the process the atomosferic pressure as to be controled in order to change from a liquid to a gas. check it out. i think you might have to invest in a freeze drying chamber. i've found millions of them on ask.com but nobody ever gives a price. i'm assumeing they are rediculously priced.

Has anyone else ever successfully tried making a homemade lyophilizer? I have seen these things used at my workplace, and it would seem that it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to make. Simply have a chamber that is sealed enough to hold a descent vacuum, put some dry ice in it, and have a vacuum pump running to the system to continually draw a vacuum. I'm sure the lab-grade models costs thousands of bucks, but I would think such a system wouldn't be too difficult.

It's been a while since I've been around. Posted about this several years ago under my original name.

Please note I misstated the caloric exchange;
"It takes 80 calories of transfer to form ice"
It should be 10 calories.
Maybe I can get my old handle back?
