Spawn, Bluethumbs Compost Questions????
    #554887 - 02/17/02 11:08 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

I just purchased 7 pounds of bluethumbs compost. What is the purpose of spawn?? Could I just inject the compost bag and allow that to colonize then fruit? What if I did both?? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You definitely should not inject spores into the compost. The purpose of spawn is to give your mycelium a head start on any other contaminations that could infect your compost. It will also speed things along. Once you put a fully colonized jar of spawn mixed in with compost there are little pieces of mycelium mixed all through the compost so they will grow together fast and take the compost over. Also spores don't always do so good when injected into things like compost, they don't germinate as quickly or successfully.
Look at the thread about timothy cob hay in the pictures forum to get a good idea about how to mix the spawn in. It is a great post. You are just substituting compost for hay. I believe bluethumb's compost is mostly hay anyway.
