Cacti: Signs of Disease. What do you do?
    #5539070 - 04/20/06 08:14 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Having looked after my cacti (a Peruvian Torch and a San Pedro) for a few weeks now after potting them, I've noticed that the San Pedro has developed these nasty looked spots on it that make me think its 'rotting' somehow. These spots are at the top on this new knob-like part of growth which is a lighter green than the rest of the plant. Now when I potted the San Pedro, I accidently watered it too soon so I'm thinking that this could be the cause of it
I guess what I'm gettin at is, what should be done? Should I cut off the rotted looking part, and if so how should I go about this?
What can be done to help my cacti friends?
How can I tell if they're really sick, and what signs should I be looking for?
Any help greatly appreciated.

if they are soft and weeping black then cut back to healthy flesh. If the scars are hard then leave them

I second that. If you want advice, pictures are really, really important.

Some things that you see on cactus can look bad to a newbie, but are normal. Some things are much more sinister. Hell, I've had a number of San Pedro... and even I don't know how to identify many of the things that can go wrong with them. Even with the ability to inspect them visually.
