Well I recently bought a book on medicinal plants. I was looking through the active compounds list and saw this one. On searching it up I find that the chemical is seritonin, and is found in high quantities in the plant.

they are very healthy for you to eat. Don't eat them from a polluted area though. steam them and put butter or salt on them and they are fantastic!

5-hydroxytryptophan

They work wonders for arthritis and sore muscles. It's a completely different experience when one stings themselves intentionally. In the summer i slather myself up and it relieves pain for up to two days. Basically, the body's native pain-relievers go to the area to fight off the invasion.

When exposed to cooler temps, they will produce more alkaloids IMO. They are also thought to be a 'cure' to hayfever when taken orally in large amounts daily because they contain (anti)- histamines. They won't sting after being dried.

I have seeds collected from the forest if anyone is interested in trying to grow.

Sounds great. I love food from "wild". And this food is like everywhere.
On a practical note: how long do they need to coke/steam? Do you need the youngh leaves or can the older ones also be used?

younger leaves prolly taste better although i've never noticed much difference. I eat the stem and all when i steam them. steam until they're spinach quality firmness. it's all your personal choice. also i dunno what vitamins are specificly found in nettles but, they're great in tea, and are good for you when you're sick or just wanna stay healthy.

"The Medicinal Garden: How to grow and use your own medicinal herbs"
By Anne McIntyre

This is a good book for anyone who is interested in growing their own herbs for healing. It covers everything from how and where to plant, when to harvest, how to dry herbs and the book gives some interesting explanations of the latin names of the herbs. Also covered are the ailments that each herb helps, any dangers of the herbs, how to prepare teas, infusions, oils, syrups, compresses, tinctures and how to store them.
