More difficult. No explanation necessary.

"oppress

? verb 1 keep in subjection and hardship."

i should have used the word 'tyranny'. too late now though.

"tyranny

? noun (pl. tyrannies) 1 cruel and oppressive government or rule. 2 a state under such rule. 3 cruel and arbitrary exercise of power or control."

The reason i said that is because oppression is a pretty broad category.

Like, in the United States, users of certain drugs are oppressed, and the fact that the citizens can own guns doesn't change that. However, gun ownership may make a bigger difference in a nation where more aspects of people's lives are oppressed.

"Does gun ownership thwart oppressive governments" is a pretty subjective matter, because everyone has their own idea of what, at a minimum, constitutes "oppression."

gun ownership is a funny thing because its something i do believe should be legal...however its sad that if you goto a gun show u see the only people really obsessed with guns are dumb, white trash toothless rednecks. no wonder in the US there is that statistic stating more guns owners end up having their piece accidentally kill a family member than actually kill a home invader. its just the people who own guns are such drunk right wing garbage. people who get all obsessed with guns are scary too, i mean if u get a monthly gun magazine to look at pictures of other guns you really need to seek help.

ya know what else is funny is how gun people think everyone should be armed just in case. its like gee how bouts we work harder to create a society where i dont have to walk around strapped all the time.

It's pretty meaningless without giving a reason. Obviously everyone who supports guns will just vote "yes" even if they have no valid reason for doing so.

of course its more difficult.  heres a good example

there is this neighbor hood that I sometimes visit, and I'm not sure but I think there is some drugs moving through this area   Everybody there walks around strapped, and the cops know this, and the cops know what these guys are up to.  They have been patroling this neighborhood for ohhh well I'd say 4 or 5 years.  They are too scared to enforce their own laws.  They stop people leaving the hood, but inside they never even make a traffic stop.

If those guys werent all walking with their guns out in plain view how long do you think it would take the cops to walk in and take out all the dealers?

I find it interesting to see so many left-wing anti-gun people here, because it's very different from this other forum I post on, with much more radical ideologies. Over there, the far left(communists, socialists and anarchists, oh my!) support gun rights, because they see them as the only tool the proletariat have available to them to overthrow the bourgeoisei. Thus, they have little tolerance for bourgeois liberals, and their ideals.

I voted more difficult, but...

How about a poll on how many people have used a gun to fight tyranny?

often times its not the guns themselves, but the unspoken threat of their use, that fights tyranny via political influence. Remember, in the back of every ruler's mind, there is a little voice saying 'You can't push them too far or it will be the guillotene for you.' The common ownership of guns makes this voice much louder.

*applause, applause!*

Mark this day on your calendars -- I am not just agreeing with DoctorJ (for possibly the first time ever) but enthusiastically applauding his succinct and dead-on nailing of this point.

Well done, sir!

Yep. That's what happened in Europe. I forgot which country though, but kings were told that if they got out of line, they would be killed.
