if you feel your spine hitting something, you're doing it wrong.
do it on some padding, a yoga mat or other.
don't go all the way up to your knees, about 1/3 of that distance is enough... keep your back in line as you do it, don't curl your spine... keep the upper half rigid so your abs have to work hard to pull the upper body up
don't use your hands to pull your head, basically

Do I always keep my shoulders from touching the ground?
That's another point I wasn't really clear on

Just an addendum, if you want to build a stronger core then incorperate the "side bridge" and "plank" positions. In conjunction with proper crunches, you will have strong core than keeps you injury free and sexy when you're nekkid (Or half nekkid at the beach!).
I try to keep things simple when I crunch. Contract the muscles like a slinky and let your chest pull towards your knees. I can't explain it, but you should know when you're doing it properly if you know where the muscles are and how they work. Just watch some hots girls do them and you'll see what I mean. I hardly do crunches but I really should... summer's coming up. Plus it means more time near sweaty, hot college girls.

I like to do a variation where I lay down and get all balanced. Then I spread my legs apart to a comfortable width and crunch like that. It feel great to me. Whatever you do, remember that you're supposed to curl into it from your core area (dick).
The thing I like about that dudes crunch is his idea for hand placement. Right on the temples is a great place to reference from.
