inducing pinning
    #542576 - 02/06/02 01:55 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

i've heard of putting cakes in the fridge to induce pinning, but i was wondering if there are any other known methods to induce pins to form on colonised cakes.

light, air exchange..
cold shocking doesn't help at all from my experience (which isn't really that much)
I heard cubes don't really respond to cold shocking..

I am all for cold shocking.

It mimics the natural enviornment, to tell the mycelium... "Hey, we're almost at the surface of this pile of shit, and its time to make some fruits".

It might not be a distinct change in time or whatever from if you didn't cold shock or not, but it does produce a little bit more of a even flush, and a few days sooner than you would get it otherwise.

Yes and in addition do giving them a cold shock, you must have the other inducing ingredients: Light, increased gas exchange (More oxygen), cooler temp and high humidity. (100% for casings, 95% for cakes).

Isn't that backwards on the humidity? I thought you wanted near 100% for cakes, but didn't need as much for casing. The casing provides the humid environment needed to maintain healthy mycelium and pinning.

nope, read:
http://66.34.63.18/GROWTH_PARAMETERS.htm

You have it @ 100% until pins form. Then you lower it to around 85-90%.

ITs straight out of TMC.
