To put it bluntly I've made serveral achoal lamps in the past and all of them leave black marks on the needle, does this really matter, I thought the point of an achoal lamp was to avoid this, thanks

Wipe the black marks off with an alcohol soaked cotton ball, this will also cool your needle. Flaming is just to sterilize the inside of the needle.

Actually, flaming is to sterilize the whole needle. Alcohol is a sanitizer, not a sterilizer, so the needle is cleaner before you touch it with the alcohol soaked cotton.
If you're getting soot on your needle, it's probably because you're using rubbing alcohol in your lamp. You need to go to the hardware store and get denatured alcohol. It won't leave soot on your tools. It will be in the paint section. The first drop or two of spore solution will cool your needle just fine. RR

but honestly what is going to land on my alcohole soaked needle and contam my jars. my house is bad with contams and the last 2 inoculations i havn't even flammed the needle ive just wiped with alcohole (70%) mind you i guess i had just had teh needle in boiling water. those last tiem i never bother boiling the needle to sterilize eitehr i just sucked up a few full syringes of boiling water then expelled it. like i said my house is full of contams and so far everythings worked out fine with my last two less steril procedures... maybe it was just luck?

If alcohol sanitizes and not sterilizes I would love to know what type of spores or fungus or bacteria can live through alchohol, I have yet to hear about one.

mayeb the spores arn't actually killed by the alcohole. It just gets drunk and doesn't pay child support.

Here's an experiment for ya. Wash your hands very well with alcohol. Now, make a thumbprint right in the center of a petri dish and seal it up. In about three or four days, you'll see a few hundred bacteria and fungi that survived the alcohol. RR

well now your talking about hands, we have bacteria and fungus under our fingernails and other crevice's on our hands.
How about this for a test, find the dirtiest, dustiest corner of your house, and rub a penny in it, then dip the penny in alcohol (while wearing sterile gloves, and put the penny in a petri dish........

I dont care how many times you wash your hands or with what chemical, you will still have fungus and bacteria on your hands, you could completly submerge your hand in betodyne and it wont get everything, If there was a way to completly sterilize your hands then why do we need gloves?
