Drug trial creates 'Elephant Man'
    #5403874 - 03/15/06 02:48 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Quote:

LONDON, England -- Two men are in critical condition in a London hospital and four others are in serious condition after taking part in a clinical trial for a new drug.

One victim, whose head and neck were reported to have increased to three times normal size, was described by a friend as resembling "the Elephant Man."

Wow. Remind me not to take part in any of those drug trails...

Yeah, and if they ever decide to remake The Elephant Man, then they have a real life subject, no make up required. He could get very wealthy.

he ended up in intensive care - i've seen plenty of people in intensive care, and they all look like that at some stage.

it's not like he grew a trunk and tusks or something

To be fair it seems like this is a freak accident, think of how many of these trials are going on around the world every year and when was the last time you heard anout something like this happening?

they fucked up the trials, they dosed loads of people at once instead of staggering it in case of adverse affects

I really, really, really hope I'm never desperate enough for money to consider drug trials

bullshit. dosing was staggered as it always is in Phase I trials.

really? i did loads when i was a student, never had any problems, got free and thorough medicals, and made plenty of money to help get me through university. trials go on all the time all over the world, and are usually extremely safe, still extremely safe, in fact. this was a first, a freak incident unpredictable by any standard evidence, involving five years of test-tube and animal experiments.

take a look at this feedback and judge for yourself - interesting reading:

really? I heard that an hour ago on channel 5 news

serves me right for watching channel 5

but really, you feel comfortable taking drugs that haven't yet been approved by the BMA or whatever? Based on the number of drugs that have quite serious unexpected side-effects even after they've been trialed and approved, I'm far too neurotic to be someone's guinie pig

fair play - that's why there is always a thorough and detailed informed consent process from a doctor, followed by a robust screening process to minimise risk. plus all trials, including this one, cannot start withour the green light from independent Ethics committee and from the government's expert review panel.

yeah, i'd still volunteer tomorrow - i bet loads of shroomerites have done them. so long as you pick a professional outfit and feel confident in the staff, it's less risky than taking a 100mile road trip.

You make a valid point - I guess it's just a hangup of mine. Basically, if I took part, for every negative health issue I suffered for the next six months, I'd freak out massively over whether or not it was connected to the trail, even though it almost certainly wouldn't be. I'd drive myself crazy :crazy2:
