Simple ID question.. PICS
    #5390059 - 03/11/06 06:45 PM (18 years, 21 days ago)

I found this patch today but didnt pick... Any idea if their adible, active or toxic? I touched the gills and the result was a black tarry or oilish print... maybe its because it was raining... anyway enjoy!

Those are members of the genus Coprinus. Possibly Coprinus lagopus.

All members of the genus are referred to as Inky Caps because the auto digest into black 'ink'.

That is a species in the genus coprinus, the inky caps. The oilish print is the liquefication of the gills - hence the name inky cap. Your pics look like Coprinus comatus, the shaggy mane. Shaggy manes are good eating before the gills get liquidy. However, I don't recommend eating these, some inky caps are not edible, and some will cause you to become ill if you have alcohol before or after eating them. None of them are hallucinogenic, and none are horribly poisonous. Nice finds.

nice... so do you recommend grabbing up a couple googling up recipes and printing some for future cultivation? on the topic I know this is not the forum, but how hard are they to cultivate and how 'rare' persay... would it be worth my trouble?

Google coprinus first

I highly doubt those are C. comatus.

They are more likely C. lagopus, the "Magpie Inky Cap". They are not edible.

Try googling both Latin names and see which is a better match.

being a newbie sucks :frown:... yeah I googled and its definately not 'shaggy mane'... sigh. For this reasons sometimes I think I should stick with psylocybe containing mushrooms. Edibles just seems so hard to grow/identify

morels! gasp! must google everything I can from them.. I heard they can only grow wild and are VERY hard to grow. Also Ive heard of false morels/truffles... Luckily none are toxic (right?)

Sadly enough the only edible mushrooms Ive tried are those in pizza... What do morels TASTE like making them so valuable??

They taste like pure heaven.

Search posts in this forum and in Advanced Mycology. People are now successfully cultivating morels.

There are some poisonous false morels, but the are easy to distinguish once you know what you are looking for.

That's one of the great rewards of mushroom hunting, right about the time I feel like I'll never find anything, BAM. Then I get even more hooked on it. Don't get discouraged, just keep reading. We were all n00bs at one time...or another

peace

Ok, after going to mushroomexpert.com Im almost certain that they are comatus since it has the distinctive feature of inky gills and some 'shaginess' (some are more shaggier than others). What concern me though is that it said theres a toxic one that closely resembles it, it didnt mention which so my question is, which toxics can comatus resemble and, what are the distinctive features? Ill be visiting this patch tomorrow and definately creating plenty of spore prints...

They look a little more like Coprinus quadrifidus in my opinion.
edit* What were they growing on?
C. quadrifidus is a spring/summer staple at my house despite it being listed as undesirable by some sources. However not seeing your mushrooms, habitat, and growth patterns firsthand, I am unabe and unwilling to reccomend eating them.
Another thing to keep in mind with select Coprinus species is the reaction one can experience when alcohol is consumed within a few days of ingestion.

Oh yeah... I toured a mushroom farm today (Lentinus edodes and three Pleurotus species)... oh my gosh... pretty cool

By George, your right!

My Magpie Inky Caps are mislabeled. They are Coprinus quadrifidus.
