Dunking a Casing: an experiment by: Space Wombat
    #537094 - 01/31/02 05:38 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

my crazy wombat just finished dunking a casing. He knows you are only "supposed" to dunk cakes, but this was half a casing that had completed 2 flushes (the first was a few 2 inch mini dudes and a bunch of aborts, the second was 14 4-5 inch dudes) 3 days later no growing pins and a sad looking casing with very little casing left on it (it was cased 50/50 plus but only 2 cm thick using the mushmush tek). The wombat wonders if anyone has sucessfully done this? what if anything can i expect? any tips? I will obviously post wombats results later. The casing is now sitting back in the terrerium under normal conditions.

does the casing layer come off under water..........do you apply a new layer of 50/50? My casing has had a weak 1st flush and come away from the sides....looks really dry and I have no idea what to do.

a good bit of the casing came off for the wombat but some of it is attached to the mycelium. the wombat did not add new casing soil but he believes you could. it would probably slow down your next pins a couple of days but he's not sure.

Although I never dunk my casings heres a recommendation for those who do.

Punch a few holes in the bottom of the casing tray if possible. It is almost a certainty that the casing will absorb too much water during the dunking process and will begin to drain a bit of it towards the bottom. Of course, since the bottom casing layer is already saturated from the dunk it will not be able to absorb and handle the drainage.

The holes on the bottom could provide an adequate drainage system for the excess water in the casings. Basically, it would help prevent pooling which could lead to contamination. Oh yeah, and of course, the casings would have to be elevated a little to allow the water to drain out rather then touch the terrarium bottom and stay inside the casing.

My 35 cents. Peace.

UPDATE! Space Wombat reports that so far the dunking was a HUGE sucess......There are about 20 PHAT dudes on the less than half of a casing that remains and they are fatter by far than any dudes from the first 2 flushes. They should be mature in about 3 more days so wombat will report in then.

well this is an old thread but my friend tried it out and figured he would share

he also did this a few days ago but used a slightly different procedure

after he submerged the entire casing the casing layer came off the mycelium "brick" he then moved the brick to a new container in which he submerged it for 8 hours. after all was finished he drained it for about 30 min....applied a new bottom casing layer that was larger than normal to absorb all the extra water, and a new casing layer on top. casing layer was 50/50+

after about a week or so it is showing a great pin set.

yeah, it is a cool idea, some say that the casing layer provides enough moisture for the casing to not need to be dunked.... but my friend thinks it helps, he likes to squeeze the life out of em since he has a tough time sometimes getting contam-free substrate while trying to use new methods.

Wasn`t sure if anyone else ever tried this lol.... but I recently dunked a casing of ecuadors after the third flush. It was a weak flush so I figured what da fuck?.... Holy shit if i didn`t harvest 280 wet grams of that Mofo.... incredible..... Nice fat stemmed specimens!....definetly worth a try if you have a tired casing that seems dead
