Spore: A game that fits everyone?
    #5361644 - 03/03/06 01:53 PM (18 years, 20 days ago)

This game looks frigin SWEET. you start out as a microscopic creature in a drop of water and move all the way to a creture who can fly through the solar system, abducting other creatures etc.

35 Minute movie and it's worth watching if you like PC games =)

Only other thing I'd like to see is a direct multiplayer system. Apparently the game sends copies of your creatures to be characters in other people's games, but they become just computer-controlled NPCs there.

I imagine that the asynchronous transfer of content probably requires a lot of bandwidth. That wouldn't make it easy to have a smooth experience while playing synchronous multiplayer. Also, maxis is not known for multiplayer. To my knowledge, they only have one game that is multiplayer: The Sims Online. I had a subscription to that for a while. It was fun for a while, but it's definitely not a world class multiplayer game.

Will Wright is a man who designs software toys. He knows how to make a single player game into a rewarding experience. That's what he does best, and that's why he's done so well coming up with this brilliant single player game.

To be honest, I think we're all going to lose enough time from our lives just playing the single player game. If there was multiplayer too, we'd have to start up addiction clinics to help people who have lost their lives to a Spore addiction

He commented on how it can take a lot of work. I imagine it's comparable to how long it takes to raise a sim from an infant, through college, and to their death of old age in The Sims 2 (assuming you utilize aspirations to make them live to a ripe old age). In case you do not know how long that takes: many days of playing it through most of the day.

Then again, from the sounds of things, you have the option to continue playing around instead of buying the upgrades that advance to the next phase of the game. So you could probably dabble around indefinitely at each stage of the game. That could mean spending more time playing Spore than it took Deep Thought to come up with the answer "42".

Oh god, I never even thought about the expansions, so much potential in an already amazing game idea. Good lord.
