Is this a contam on my casing layer? (with pics)
    #5360313 - 03/03/06 12:57 AM (18 years, 30 days ago)

This is my fisrt casing and I'm wondering if this is a contam (check pics). I cased the substrate 4 days ago and then covered with aluminum foil. I have been keeping the casing moist by misting it once a day. However, yesterday I noticed a white color in the casing and thought that it might be mycelium poking through. Today, upon further inspection, I noticed that the white substance was not growing through the casing layer but seemed to be growing on top of it.  I'm not positively sure however. It is the only spot on the casing layer with white on it. There is no other appearance of mycelium breaking through the surface. My casing layer is about 1 to 1.2 inches thick. My substrate is about 5 inches thick.  If it is a contamination should I just scrape it off and add more casing? What should I do?
The substrate is 10 pounds of horse poo spawned to WBS. The casing layer is peat vermiculite and powdered limestone/ crushed o shell. The whole casing is incubating at around 75F. Please help! :mushroom2:

I'll be really interested to find out what you guys make of this. Does Cobweb look like this?

Should I dig out what is contaminated and patch the hole with some fresh casing? I'm not giving up on the casing. There's over ten pounds of substrate in that thing. I'll be damned if she doesn't fruit. What do I need to do to fix the problem.

I am not capable of answering the question. You may also post a picture of this in the contaminant forum.

If I were in your shoes, I would remove it, treat it with some H2O2 and patch the casing.

There are more knowledgeable people here...expect them to chime in tomorrow.

That is definitely Mr. Green. You can try and remove that portion of the substrate with a spoon but chances are it'll come back. The mold is likely feeding on other sources of that substrate and may surface in other areas. Remove it, patch, and see what happens.

Moving this to the Contamination Forum.

Dig out the contam with a spoon and then splash salt on it or put salt directly on the contam? How long do I let the salt sit on the contam?

Keep it there. The idea is that the salt will absorb the moisture from the area and burn anything that tries to grow.
