Flowhood....blower questions
    #535054 - 01/29/02 02:34 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Ok so i got this blower for free... Is it too big to use for a flowhood? doesnt state a speed on it........heres some pics.......

it is made by Franklin Electric......1.85 AMP. 115 V. 1/15 HP. 60HZ. TYPE 841
and 1500 RPM TPM
Would I have to make a huge hood to use this blower? Is it possible to have to strong of blower for a smaller hood?

Definitely not too big. When I built my last hood I used a 1/10 HP single squirrel cage fan behind a 24"x12" HEPA. It worked fine. You are dealing with less HP, but you do have two blowers off the same motor. The two blowers could be a disadvantage to you because your low HP might not be able to drive both blowers at 1" pressure. It's really hard to know whether it will work without knowing its CFM. In my opinion, though, it should be adequate to drive a 24"x12" HEPA, definitely a 12"x12" if it's not too wide.  For the larger filters you need high flow, high HP blowers. The hood I have in construction right now is a 24"x36" HEPA, and I'm using a 1/2 HP direct drive furnace blower;).

i planned on using a replacement hepa to make my flowhood too, but then i found a hepa unit with an ionizer build in for $60 canadian.
the orignal filter (replacement) i had was 1'x2' and it was about 45 bucks canadian.

Hi Club, I got it from "a company" that my place of employment orders from regularly. The price after shipping was $193.20. I realize that I could have went with a filtersrx.com unit for less, but I have heard some negative things about them. I'll post some pics when I get this beast done...

Don't worry club. There is nothing wrong with the way filtersrx.com units work. The only complaints I have heard was that thier frame wasn't very good. I am referring to the particle board framed filters. I have heard nothing bad about the metal framed ones. The way I understand it, is that if you can mount them, they will work. I have just heard the particle board frames suck...

psilocybespawn,

I have been thinking of making a flow hood.
I have my own wood shop and i am very handy with my hands.
Would a Dayton motor 1/30 hp with 3020 r.p.m's be too small ?
Its a single squirrel cage fan.
I'd like to make a small flow hood out of it if i can.
A friend found a site that gives free hepa filters away...as a trial type thing.
They are suppose to be 99.99% efficiency filters.
If i can't use it i can probably get my hands on a bigger squirrel cage.
After i get the addy of the place giving these filters away....i will post it.
I'd appreciate some replies....thanks.

Sounds too small. 1/30 HP isn't much. It is really hard to tell if it would work or not without knowing how much volume the fan moves. Look on e-bay, there are always cheap surplus direct drive furnace blowers on there for next to nothing. I bought that 1/10HP FASCO blower on there for $35 plus shipping. When I got it, it was brand new-never used. I used it for a long time before finally selling the hood. Keep your eyes open...

Each filter needs it?s own sized blower.

A 12"x24" needs a blower that generates around 240 cubic meter(7200 cubic feet) air per hour at a static pressure of 1" water column.

Look for these 2 values when purchasing a blower.
A blower I use and that meets there requirements has 1/8 horsepower, but this depends on it?s design, so the horsepower value alone is useless.

I am in the process of building a larger flowhood. I have built a 12 x 24 hood following the instructions on the lil shop of spores site. I want the bigger model now. I have located a huge furnace blower, and I am still waiting for the 24x 48 hepa filter. I was just wondering if anyone would share their specs on a 24 x 48 hood. I just need the measurements of all sides and top and bottom plywood pieces.

A few other questions I had:

1)How do you calculate how many CFM's a blower puts out. My furnace blower only has an rpm and horse power rating and does not list the CFM's. Is there a formula to calculate this?
2)How does one calculate static pressure?
3) If my blower blows too much, how can I reduce the speed if it is direct drive?
thanks!

You can?t. It has to be measured.

2)How does one calculate static pressure?

You can?t. It has to be measured.

3) If my blower blows too much, how can I reduce the speed if it is direct drive?

You can throttle it by making the outlet if the blower smaller thius increase the static pressure the blower has to overcome. Or you can make a recirculation of a part of the air back to the blower inlet.

seeing as how my friend just got a 1/3HP blower how exactly would she go about finding out how many CFM it outputs? She was told over 1000CFM free air and around 500CFM @ 1" SP, but that is not very precise and she was going to construct a 24X18 HEPA flowhood with this blower.
She really wants to do agar work and grain to grain transfers.
thanks for any help
