How fast can you run a mile?
    #5334296 - 02/24/06 08:05 AM (18 years, 1 month ago)

I started exercising this week (it's been years since I've exercised regularly) and I'm going to try and time how long it takes for me to run a mile every Friday morning to see how I progress.

This morning I ran a mile in 7 min and 5 sec. I'm 22 years old, 5'6", and about 150 lbs.

I want to see how I stack up against you guys. What's your mile time, age, height and weight?

5:05 was my PR. (I love to brag about it  ) I don't run anymore, though - I'm into bike racing now. I'm  5'7", 132 lbs and age 21. I've been a bicyclist since I was a kid and only ran for a time in high school.

here's some tips to be a better miler:

1) You don't need to run mega-miles to get better. Consistently running daily is better for improvement than running more than you're able to handle everyday (duh). At most 6 miles a day is all you need to gain some serious endurance (IF you wanna be a miler...).

2) Start pretty easy. Now, I'm not sayin' you shouldn't push yourself hard SOMETIMES. When you're starting, it seems like ANY run is difficult.  You should only increase your mileage and/or intensity about 10-15% a week, even if you're in your 20's. It takes some time (like a couple months) for your bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and stuff to adapt to running.
Trust me, you'll feel sooo much better to just ease into it. I used to go out and run half-marathons outta shape and got stress fractures for it. Not fun.
You oughta keep the distance running easy enough when you're beginning that you could do your workout twice without dyin'. A good indicator is to be able to talk in sentences when you're running. Also, take a rest day every week - it's good for you.

4) Starting off, you can run HARD once, maybe twice a week. The rest of the time, just do easy, fun miles. Usually, there's no need to do more. When you do run hard, focus on your half- and quarter- mile times. You only need to run those when you're rested up. Improving those times is an easier way to improve overall. I find that it's easier to torture myself for 2.5 minutes than for a solid 5 minutes.

5) It takes considerable time to get any good. A lot of changes are happening in your body and they sure as hell don't happen overnight  Remember that improvement is what it's all about. Experiment, and to do that, you need to keep track of what you're doing. A good start if you're kinda serious about this running stuff would be to go to your library and get a book on the subject. They're informative and motivational.

Enjoy!

When I was a spry, younging I could do the mile in about 7 flat. Now that I'm old and cranky at 18 I wrap it up after around 8-10 minutes.

One year to make the baseball team, my coach decided that we had to run 2 miles in 15 min or under.  And we'd have to do it after practice until we did do it.  I was the chunky David Wells-like pitcher

I was the only one that hadn't done it yet, but he wasn't actually going to cut me.. so he made me do it until he got tired of going down to the track with the whole team to watch me attempt something everyone knew I couldn't do.

So yeah, my best mile is about 7ish.. then I get burnt out.. quickly
