Can I case popcorn substrate directly with vermiculite? Is there a reason why it wouldnt work? Is it a waste of time?
If you can, I am going to use my LC to spawn jars of it....It seems like an easy way to get in to grains.

Fruits off straight popcorn are low on potency. If you want to go this route rye is better and rye berries are even better.

Rye is short for rye berries. You can case the popocorn straight if you want though. It'd be better to get some poo to spawn it to, but they will grow just fine off of cased popcorn. Like sin said though, there might be a lack of potency, but no moreso than growing on BRF.

Ahh! So...BRF and Popcorn provide nutrients, but in limited supply? This can lead to decreased potency because nutrients are not available in the substrate to sufficiently enrich the mycelium?? Other grains like rye berries contain more nutrients and are able to provide more to the mycelium?
What a learning curve.

Yeah, you've got it right there. And I'd like to add that the reason why people usually use grains like popcorn and Wild Bird Seed [WBS] is because you can get massive amounts for very little cash and they make excellent substrates for the spores to germinate in and for the mycelium to colonize quickly. Then, once you've got the colonized grain, they can easily be broken up and mixed in with a bulk substrate, such as horse poo, compost, or wheat straw, to act as spawn so that the myc will colonize the bulk substrate. These bulk substrates, especially poo and compost, are full of the perfect kinds of nutrients for producing large, potent fruits.
