All Vermiculite Casing Timeline Question
    #532285 - 01/26/02 05:47 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

My friends all vermiculite casing has begun to show mycelial growth on the top in several semi-distant locations, and he's put it in his terrarium with his cakes. He's wondering if this was the right thing to do, or ?
Can you just leave it out, because the casing itself creates the humidity needed, or should you put it inside another terrarium seperate from the cakes (not a problem), or is it ok in with the cakes. Its matias romero that's being cased, from a cake with a funky ass growth on it that was cut off. He was realy amazed that anything at all happened with this cake!

Hooray!

if you live in a dry area your casing may get too dry (you can fight this with mistings as necessary but you should stop misting when pins form). you probably wouldn't want your casing in the same terrarium as your cakes because the humidity would be too high and would just stimulate more mycelial growth and not pinning.

you say there is some growth in several semi-distant locations - you should cover those first appearances of mycelium with some fresh casing material so that you can achieve a nice even pinset. then wait for another 1-3 days (you can wrap the casing in foil during this time and check in after the first 24 hrs). when you see mycelium starting to poke through all parts of the casing, expose the casing to light for an hour or more each a day and make sure it gets lots of freash air. i fan 5x + daily.
