Cactus / Ethno Ring commences!

So, originally the idea was a Free Cactus Ring, but has shifted into the "Ethno Ring" for free seeds and cuttings (cactus and other).
The Ethno Ring website isn't up yet, but it is being worked on and will hopefully be fully functional within a week.
While we will store seeds, we will not be storing donated cuttings while they wait to find a new home, unless you pay to have them shipped to us. Otherwise the system will work by you notifying us that you have cuttings for donation, then they will be listed as available on the website with your email (or if you do not want it to be shown they can contact one of the storehouses), and when someone wants one they will send the shipping money directly to you, and you will send the plant directly to them.
We are applying eve69's idea of credit, and eventually a free pass, to cactus and plant cuttings, but not seeds. Each cutting contribution you make gives you one cutting credit. Once you have contributed 3 times you will no longer be bound by the credit rule. Alternatively, donating especially rare seeds, or helping the ring out in some other way can earn you a credit, but whether your contribution earns a credit is up to the discretion of the storehouse runners, currently llamabox and myself. It may also be that if you have the vouch of a couple trusted ring donators that you will be granted a credit, but only once.
Seeds and anything else will be sent out once a week on Tuesday. We will not answer emails asking whether an item has been shipped yet. If it happens to be convenient, a storehouse may send out items other days of the week, but this is not obligatory, and emails asking us to do so will probably have the opposite effect on us. We will not take responsibility for lost mail.
Ordering starts once the website is completed and posted. On it will be a list of what's available. This will probably happen about a week from now, as we're allowing that amount of time for seeds to be donated and ordered.
If money support is something you'd like to do you can send it by mail, and maybe later, paypal. It will help cover the cost of PO boxes, seed orders, and should there ever be money after expenses we'll save it for the next expenses or take it as reward for our efforts. We're telling you now what will happen in that situation of "if," but we don't know what level of support we're going to have. We are planning on having t-shirts and perhaps other objects for sale on the site in the future. If we have something cool to offer, we'll try to do so.
We are now requesting all the seeds you wish to donate. Know and label precisely the variety of seeds you are sending. For example, if you send "Peruvian Torch" seeds, we want to know exactly what variety of Peruvians they are, and I don't think there will be any demand for the kk242 kind. Also know that you can send/receive to/from either storehouse from either country.
Ethno Ring PO Box 52527 1136 - 2929 Barnet Hwy Coquitlam, BC V3B 7J4 Canada
Managed by Disco Cat
or
Ethno Ring PO Box 1303 Richmond, Indiana 47375 USA
Managed by llamabox
A UK storehouse may be available in the future.
When the ordering starts: Send $1 in an envelope to the storehouse closest/most conventient to you with the type of seeds you wish to receive, and also an email address in case we need to contact you concerning the seeds. Depending on our supply and how much people donate, this $1 will allow you to receive one, to three kinds of seeds - otherwise we might be giving away too many seeds to too few people. This is a system that we'll find the proper balance for later, as experience gathers.
Wish us luck, D.C.

count on a minimum of 5 bucks from me, maybe more. I will also TRY and send you guys about 10 bucks a month without requests for seeds, simply because I know every little bit helps in these kinds of situations, and too many of my favorite sites have been closed down because of a lack of funds. I think it would be unlikely, but very cool, if people that used this service, and even people who just liked it, were to try and help support it via donations, in order to keep it running. we have all had the dissappointed feeling you get when you find out a wonderful thing was closed down because no one donated, or there were a lot of donations at one time, but then they all tapered off.

I can probably donate some seeds. but to be honest I dont see the point to this. there is no guarantee that the seeds I get from a free seed ring holds the quality i am looking for, for cactus its impossible to id the specie by looking at the seeds. there is always a couple of houndred other cactus with similar seeds. So this will be a system based on trust to the donators. on the net there is several seed vendors with ethnobotanical seeds, many of these sells everything from unviable seeds to seeds that is not what they are supposed to do, species like intoxicant mint and peruvian torch is very often something else. this goes for seeds and for plant material. But this is just my opinion on the matter, i like the idea tho so I will be willing to donate some seeds to get you started.

Indeed. It would be years before you could properly ID the species.

yea, but if it is free, at least you don't lose money(shipping is so cheap, that it doesn't count as real money) like you would to a vendor online.

sure its free, but if you belive you are growing 30 san pedros and you use years to care for them and they turn out to be some inactivc trich instead your in for a huge disapointment, and you will regret not spending a few dollars that ensured you the specie you wanted

Right, it would be worth it to do for curiosity if you're already growing trusted seeds. But... isn't the point of a free seed ring to provide them to people who *don't* already have something going?

That is true, and in that case I can only stress that people need to accurately labal their seeds and know what they are themselves. Still, this worry only comes into play concerning a certain amount of species. If someone has not labeled what variety their seeds are they may just not be used, or they may be given to people in addition to their order as a bonus.

I was advised by the moderators there to place it in the "Other Botanicals" thread. This is a free Ethnobotanical seed ring, meaning we supply many different types of seeds, not just Cacti.

Oh now this is bloody wonderful. I wholeheartedly applaud you blokes for having the mettle and the kindness to do this.
I may have to take advantage of your services at some point. Until then, I'll keep you guys in mind if I order seeds and can spare a decent amount of them.
Cuttings are far too scarce for me to donate, sadly

Thanks to everyone interested in seeing the ring work. Our website is still in production. I'm wanting it to be finished soon as well, and I'm betting seed donations will probably increase a lot once it's up. In case you're living in or near Canada, and are thinking of donating, the CAN base needs more seeds.
I had the idea that to aid with seed clarification people might also say the source of the seeds they're donating, example: online store, friend, my own plants, ebay. This would give us insight if we ever are unsure of a seeds proper plant origin.
