Humidity Question
    #5288976 - 02/11/06 02:54 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Hello,

my PF TEK cakes are colonizing nicely, and I'm experimenting with my FC so that it'l be ready when it comes to fruiting - my humidity meters say ive got 95%RH, (im using perlite, and a humidifier/air exchange unit) but i dont see drops of water forming on the sides or top of the container - they are slightly wet which i can feel on my hand, i just cant see obvious drops like i've seen on pictures of other peoples terrariums.

does this sound ok, or could it be a problem with the humidity meter. Also, will 95% be enough, i know its supposed to be 95-100 this is right on the lower end, 94/95 ish.

thanks

Alex

95 is great. water droplets are condensation from temperature difference and do not necessarily indicate a certain humidity.

does temp. have any effect on humidity?

within fruiting temp. range, not really. but it does indeed scientifically. it is less humid in the winter than the summer because warm air holds more moisture than cold air. hence heat (warm air) in drying.

that makes sense, so if im having trouble keeping humidity up to 95% just raise the temp?

i wouldn't. say you have it at 76F, 80F is only 4 degress more. out of proper fruiting temps, and too little above the previous temp to give it any appreciable increase in water retention. it would be better to correct your humidification system, esp. since that's probably where the real problem is. that or you are giving more air exchange than the humidification can make up for. too much unhumidified air exchange = drier air replacing humidified air at a rate that the humidification system cannot compensate for.
