Annoying Windows XP pop-up thing
    #5259418 - 02/03/06 01:55 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

Every 10 seconds a little bubble pops up in the lower right part of my screen. It originates from a white and red "X" button. It says "Windows has detected spyware..."

To be honest, the damn pop-up thing is more annoying than the spy-ware. How do I get rid of it?

Click on the bubble and see what happens!

The bubble is only a message. It has a little X that I can click to delete it but it pops up again in another 10 seconds. It originates from the little "X" icon.

That's a screen shot of what is popping up and making a little beeping noise every ten seconds. Also, this thing called "Pest Control" (which presents itself as a spyware killing program) has infested my computer. It pops up, has a menu in my programs menu, etc... Where the fuck did this thing come from....I didn't download it or anything. It is more annoying than the fucking spyware that probably litters my computer because of all of the 20 second porn clips I watch.

yeah youve got spyware man, that is what is causing the bubble, just get spybot and ad-aware both and scan, should fix it.

peace

What I have is called "PestTrap". I've been reading up on it. I guess it masquerades as a "spyware stopper", but it is anything but. It's pretty much a scam to try to get you to register and pay for the program. But, the main spyware scanners don't get rid of it. I am just going to format my computer I guess.

Check it out on google.

Have you tried a general spyware cleanup? You can get your computer pretty clean using simple free programs.

Download and install Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destory, CWShredder and Ewido.

Open each program, and update to get the latest definitions.

Boot into safe mode, and do a complete system scan with each program, cleaning anything found. Adware detection and disinfection will be much more successful in safe mode (tap F8 when starting the computer, select "safe mode").

Download, extract and run Smitrem - Smitrem cleans up several nasty malwares, but also empties your recycle bin and cleans out temporary files like your page file and internet cache.

Go *here* and run panda soft's online scan (temporarily disable your antivirus software while you do this). Delete anything nasty it finds.

If you don't run any anti-virus software, you can get Avast 4 Home edition for free.

After completing that process, you should be more or less malware free.

I just wrote a really nasty letter to PestTrap. Fucking scumbags. They know what they are doing.

Ah fuck, my roomate had the exact same thing, but it was for a program called 'spyware strike'.  Ad-aware and the rest dont work on it. Its just like CWS, keeps coming back, and even fucks with windows alerts.

I googled it up and sumone on one of those anti-spyware forums had a solution.

Run this:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe

Fixed it for my roomate.
