Mushroom Growing Setup Question.

I know I'm still a newbie, but I would appreciate some advice on my set up.
I have a large plastic bin that I plan on cutting a hole into and tape a dust mask filter over, I have a filtered humidifier I plan on keeping in the case itself, I'll be cutting a small hole for the power cord, then silicon it up around the cord. The humidifier will be on a timer, but can not be set for no less then 1/2 hour every 24 hours.
Do you think the humidifier will push enough air through the filter every day to not have a fresh oxygen problem? Do you think having the humidifier will cause any problems being in the case?
Plus, I couldn't find any vermiculite, will perlite work for the cakes?

Hello,
I havnt tried it, but ive heard that perlite can NOT be used to make a substrate cake, you need to have vermiculite, they are totally different things.
good luck with your growing!

Definately no on the perlite. You're still gonna want to fan. The more fresh air the better.

is that a cool mist type (impeller driven) or an ultrasonic humidifier? either way you will want to have it outside the box and pipe the humidity in.
If it's an ultrasonic humidifier i'd return it and get a cool mist. In my opinion ultrasonics make things too wet and dont have the added benefit of giving fresh air exchange that cool mists do. If you piped air from a cool mist in there you could run it all the time and have plenty of humidity and TONS of fresh air exchange.
hope this helps.
oh yea, you MUST HAVE verm to do BRF cakes.

It's impeller driven, I just checked it out, and it would easily evacuate the air in the containers 10 times over in a 30 minute session on it's lowest fan setting, I'm just concerned that it isn't putting enough moisture in the air, and the fan speed would be counter productive to drying out the FC more then it was putting moisture in the FC.
I really don't want to leave it on all the time, too much airflow makes the risk of bacteria contamination a lot greater.
It would be best if I could have the humidifier inside the FC box I'm thinking. So it would recycle a lot of the sterile air, but it would be strong enough to exchange air through the filter on the side. But the humidifier might have bacteria in the unit itsef, even though it is brand new... I guess I really don't know what to do.

hey cutter, im not all that old round here either but ive been taking it pretty serious. id like to tell you a few things. none scolding or ment to correct you, just things ive learned. i think your gonna be a fun addition to the shroomery but dont put pictures of your face in your gallery. if the tek says do it that way, do it that way. perlite is not an alternative to vermiculite for cakes. forget the cakes, shit makes better boomers. spend the money to make a flow hood and buy a pressure cooker. and build yourself an airbox. get one of the hepa filter replacements for a home hepa filter, a rabbermaid big enough to hold your humifier and airpumps and a powerstrip, and some weather sealant type tape. put it all together with one hole where the power cord exits and one for each the air and the humidifier. on the fresh air exchange (FAE) your dustmask idea is good but i think that tyvek from the post office and some rtv sealant really works well. it would be alot less hasle in the long run. good luck, long live the shroomery

Screw all that. A double tub will give you all the mushrooms you need without fanning, misting, humidifiers, air pumps, hepas, etc and it's cheap as hell to make.
