Patching after harvest

I removed two clumps of large shrooms from my casing and they were very deeply rooted. By deeply rooted I mean that there is a very fibrous stalk and very hefty roots. The mushies wouldnt "twist" out, so I cut them with a very sharp serated knife. Am I ok by just patching the spots? Do I need to dig out the root bed? Should I remove those little pins? Heres a picture to help explain.

get tweezers, pull pins and stumps they will rot under there, patch holes, and I like to put a very very thin layer over everything like 1/16 in deep. And mushrooms dont have roots, thats all mycelium so you dont need to remove next time you harvest mist heavily and give it a few minutes to soak in they will release easier.

Huh, it seems like if I remove the "stump", I'll have to dig up a huge section of the substrate. I mean it's really heavy/dense and fibrous. It makes sense about watering first for ease of removal(i'll try that next time), but when I was pulling and twisting on those buggers, it was like uprooting a small tree...

I hope you washed your hands before picking! Leave the pins bro they're your next flush FYI (if not aborts). I agree sprinkle and fill divot with casing mix and moisten down to field capacity. Also when twisting you often have to twist one way then the other as in clockwise counterclockwise. GL

yea... some say to pull each fruit seperately... i pull patches, and make small craters in my sub, and casing mix all the time.
I just lightly patch with fresh casing, and also cover any overlay that has occured.
you might wanna thing about fruiting in some other kind of container, other than a clear one. This will help from you occuring "side pinning" or wrap that puppy up with duct tape, or spray paint? something that doesn't let the light in.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm good at keeping things clean, and wash my hands now more than I ever have before! I must say, that I have harvested several shrooms now, and these guys were rooted very strongly. I have done a lot of landscaping, and these shrooms were almost equivilent to uprooting a small tree! I think next time maybe I'll twist them with two hands! lol

Good call. I fruited this casing pretty poorly overall. I cased it and threw it straight into the fc while forgetting to cover the sides. I have since put dark electrical tape around the sides and did the same to the two new casings that were just birthed. The two nwere ones were cased and patched and should prove to be much better pin sets, but only time will tell. these two should be pinning by next week.

Part of the reason you are getting such uneven pinsets could be attributed to the fashion in which you make your casings. Try crumbling you colonized substrate a little more to allow for a more uniform smoothness across the top. There are spots in your casing layer (evident in the third pic from the bottom) that are maybe an inch deep, while other areas have to be at least 3 inches in depth. Next time try to keep your substrate and casing depths as close to level as possible. This will help even out pinset, ultimately increasing yield.

Actually those two are the first that I made in that fasion where as the other one was left alone. I also broke one up jagged and the other not so much for experimental purposes as well, but your point is well taken. These grows are really just practice runs for me now, and I'm trying various methods and ways of doing things. Soon I will be doing a bulk grow of PE from WBS spawed to poo. Thanks a lot for the help people, it truly is a help! lol
