pressure cooker broken??
    #5236033 - 01/28/06 06:03 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

My PC has become mishapen.  After I used it and let it cool one day, I found it was very off balanced just sitting on my coutertop.  Reason: the entire bottom part of my 23qt PC has become rounded.  My instincts told me that must have somehow achieved a pressure inside of the PC that was great enough to cause the integrity of whatever steel alloy was used to shape it!  Then I got to thinking.  The person who engineered this device must have had the forsight to use an alloy that could sustain well more pressure than the device could potentially generate.  I know that the heat applied from below to generate the pressure could cause the alloy to become more maliable and perhaps suceptible to morhping but again it would be easy to find an alloy that wouldn't be so affected by the heat.  Has anybody had this happen to their PC? I'm planning on still using it but if it really did occur because of the pressure that was generated inside the PC, I'm worried about it exploding the next time I get it up to 15PSI!  Also, it's a little wobbly and I'm afraid it could wobble off of my range, lol.  But what are you gonna do, not grow shrooms   YEA RIGHT:mushroom2:

i just blew the pressure relief valve out of mine because i didn't turn down the temp & the pressure got too high. i was going to buy a replacement relief valve until i noticed the bottom had warped like yours had.
personally, id rather not die from shrapnel. i didn't risk it. i ordered a 22qt which will arrive in a day or 2.
Ive also heard cookers can have a problem reaching 15psi (or the actual pressure you're going for) if it becomes warped. i say its not worth it.

Something is NOT RIGHT with your safety pop/off and/or pressure weight.

It should blow out / pop off long before a PC warps out of shape.

Do you have a rubber mallet?

I say let that pressure cooker do what its gotta do, and you just go in the other room except for 5 seconds intervals of changing temp to keep it from blowing steam to much...  You sound like a smart guy, but you might be to smart, its not rocket science.  And on that note i say let it go.

It didn't run out of water did it? I know heating pots or a pressure cooker with out water in them for a while will cause them to warp the bottoms

I would tap the bottom flat, so it sets level on a burner.

I wouldn't let it cook dry again - either.

A rubber Mallet probably won't do the job.
You'll need a heavier mallet, but don't hit the PC directly.
Place the PC upside down on some cardboard, so you don't damage the sealing edge.
Place a 2x4 (Wider than the bottom) across the base.
Hammer the shit out of the 2x4 while rotating it. Till the bottom is flat again.

Have fun!

Oh yeah, almost forgot...

Cursing and yelling things like...
"Warp on me, you bastard... I'll show you!", while beating on it, also helps!
It may not make the job any easier, but the PC will definately think twice before warping again
