UV Light for Bacterial Elimination?
    #5235387 - 01/28/06 01:52 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

I received a magazine in the mail the other day, and wanted other input on this. This mechanizim uses Germicidial Ultraviolet Light to kill bacteria from toothbrushes.

Do you think this would work by using Ultraviolet light as the light source for cultivation?

would this keep contams such as Trich out?

I am talking in a bigger lightbulb style. Wouldn't this be similar to mother nature? Contam free growing?

or would it kill Mycelium? It says that it kills spores.

it will work great for sterilizing your work area before you do clean-work, but it will also kill your spores and myc, or at least cause some funky mutations...

I've heard stuff about people exposing their spores to small amounts of UV light to encourage mutations and develop unique strain characteristics, but I don't know if that really works or not.

it's really useless in cultivation

That thing might work for a toothbrush.
IMHO, it would be useless in this application.

You can sterilize air with UV light.

But, it takes a spendy set-up.

Unless you want to expose yourself to cancer causing UV radiation.

UV lights like those are for sterilizing. I have had experience with UV sterilizers for aquariums but the water has to be pumped away from the tank for treatment. You should look into Ozonators for air purification but I have never used Ozone for mushroom cultivation. I'm sure it would work once you've inoculated your medium.

UV lights could be great for working under(like a flowhood/glovebox)....but they are expensive and can be dangerous. You would not grow with it but for preparing under.

For a set up that would work would be quite expensive...I think you talking lab grade...

But yeah it could work :tongue2:

LOL, this set of G/B gloves is rated to work under UV light.
You also have to have UV glass front on the G/B.

The set of gloves alone costs $350 wholesale & about $700 retail.

So, UV light is bad for mycelium and not generally used in cultivation. Are blue lights similar at all? I know they don't emit UV and I used them to help my geckos use vitamin D, but is this an appropriate light for the fruiting chamber?

^^^^not just blue but suggested: 140 microwatts per 10 nanometer, per lumen of blue spectra 440-495 nm.

UV is a very effective sterilizer. It is one of the most cost effective and efficient water sterilizers known. Unfortunately, it only works line of sight. Meaning that any turbidity (cloudiness) will interfere with its bactericidal effect. For mushroom growing, it is excellent in the flow hood and glove box as a surface sterilizer. But it is less than adequate for general sterilization because it can't penetrate below the surface, meaning that only exposed areas are effected, and a jar of grain for example, would be largely unaffected by UV. The other problem is that humans shouldn't be exposed to this radiation, either.

Idk what that means. I have a 40 watt blue light bulb. Is that a good light source for fruiting?

Addition: have you guys seen those mercury-discharge bulbs are working in some street lamps? Not the orange but cold-white ones. They consist of a thin fluorescent shell with a worth UV bulb inside. If you obtained a bulb and EXTREMELY CAREFULLY cracked out the shell so you're holding a kickass UV light source. There are some difficulties with ballast and bulb wiring but some ganja growing guys can explain all the tricks about powerful lamps wiring..
