Would this work?
    #5222158 - 01/25/06 03:17 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

On my last grow I used 1/2 pint jars, but they took a really long time so I want to use something smaller. I thought instead of buying a quarter pint jar maybe I could just fill the bottom half of the jar with dry vermiculite and the top half with the actual substrate...That way the myc would only colonize the top half and it would be quicker...would this work? Or should I just shell out a whole three dollars for some more jars?

I think you should invest some time into liquid cultures. Then look into grains. That way you can have nearly a quart of colonized substrate within like 10 days, as opposed to having a quarter pint after 4 weeks.

But so far as your idea, yeah sure, it should work, it just doesn't seem like it'd be worth the time and effort to only get a quarter pint of colonized substrate.

do you mean you used pint jars?
1/2 pints are the norm. If your colonization time is slow, maybe consider using at least 4 inoculation points and ensure that you provide some C02 release when growth stalls. Anno did a good experiment to show how much faster colonization takes place when the pf jar is fitted with a method for gas exchange.

you don't need the dry verm in the bottom just fill halfway if you want.

Yes, I used 1/2 pint. I think I must have done something wrong. I didn't leave open holes in the top for gas exchange which I guess was a big mistake. Also, I used fine verm which is definately slower. It took literally 2 months for the jars to colonize, and I used the Brazilian strain because it was supposed to be extremely fast! I want to try LC, but it seems pretty hard. How much faster is LC...also, how much faster is WBS compared to fine verm?

LC is easy!!! everyone should try it.. as far as I am concerned it should be essential for every grower......

Next time just poke a hole in the lids, about a 1/4" diameter is plenty large enough. Stuff the hole with polyfill (pillow stuffing), or cover the top and bottom of the hole with micropore tape (3M paper tape from wal-mart). This port for gas exchange should cut your colonization time in half.
