New Canadian conservatives have taken Canada thread
    #5217368 - 01/24/06 11:20 AM (18 years, 2 months ago)

The old one had some bird doo in it and had to be tossed out, but I liked the way the legitimate dialogue was going, so here's a nice new clean thread about it.

And now an honest question to the pubbers:

What do you Canadians think is gonna happen now with major issues such as pot legalization?

It's obviously going to go out the window.

The thing I'm worried about is they're planning on putting up manditory minimums of two years for people growing weed.

Prices might sky rocket.

I'm with Toilet on this one. Legalization/decrim is fucked in Canada.

My hope is that efforts may stall but hold current ground. New MM's for pot would be devistating to the freedom of Canada, making it much more like the U.S. I shall wholeheartedly hope not, and may the Canadians take hold of some sort of stable ground and hang on.

I don't think things will change that much since the Conservatives have only a minority gov't. It will either be a deadlock and there will have to be another election, or they will have to compromise. From what I've been reading, Conservatives want to stres states' rights, so I believe BC will be safe from most of this new agenda.

Thanks. I'm wondering what the difference is with the minority government, majority government. How the hell does that stuff work?

A minority government is when the "winning" party has less seats in parliament than all the other parties combined.

In that situation, if all the other parties refuse to side with the ruling party on any given issue....no bills get passed so nothing gets done. It forces the official party to make concessions and deals with the other parties just to get anything done.

Minority governments rarely last long - the average is just 18 months. The last time we had a Conservative minority, it lasted for 9 months before a new election was called :smirk:

Majority government is just the opposite - where a single party holds more seats than all other parties combined. In that case they can push through almost any legislation they want because they will always have enough votes to do so.

Ooooh. America always gets a majority government then. Not enough independants or other parties to matter.

So how big is their minority? How many short were they of actually being a majority this time?

There are 308 seats, and the Conservatives have 124 of those.

They would need to have 155 seats to have a majority.

There is never any change in American government, just new puppets are installed periodically to maintain the illusion of change. It goes with the whole television and media brainwashing effort.

That's 31 votes they need to do something. So, how many other parties have 32 seats or more?

Even more importantly, are there 2 other parties which when combined constitute a majority?

Here's the breakdown for all the seats:

124 - Conservatives
103 - Liberals
51 - BQ
29 - NDP
1 - Independent

So as you can see, no two other parties can make up a majority. Two other parties (Libs and BQ) have more than 32 seats. It's not too important that any two other parties can't make up a majority....just remember that in having a minority government, the opposition to the Conservatives is a majority.

The Conservatives are in a tight spot, because none of the other parties are very friendly to the Conservatives - none of them can be considered ideological partners with them. That means they will have to make some pretty fair concessions to get anything at all done.

You all might be alright then. But what about this new prime minister? How much pull does he have to fuck shit up?

Not very much power at all, actually. Nothing approaching the power of a US President.

The Prime Minister is much more of a figurehead than anything else - the real "power" resides with his party, not with any one man. That's what makes a minority government so crippling.

I highly doubt anything substantial will come out of this government, and can almost guarantee that nothing drastic will come of it. I also expect another general election within 2 years.

Cool. How do you Canadians decide when to have an election? When a certain hockey team wins or something? :smirk:

Yes, such as the Great Poutine Famine of '64, when three million angry Canadians marched on the steps of parliament in protest of the lavishly poutine-filled lifestyle the government was leading at the time.
