Rio Carbon 5GB mp3 player - WTF is Janus anti-piracy technology??
    #5204457 - 01/20/06 09:45 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

I'm looking to buy a new mp3 player because my current one is only 64mbs.
I've found that the Rio Carbon 5GB is the best buy for me.
But after reading it's full description on ebay, I came across something talking about this new 'Janus anti-piracy technology'.

Can anyone explain to me what this is? Would I still be able to transfer my pirated mp3s? And can I still use Windows Media to transfer the songs?

Or will I have to use some sort of special software that comes with it, causing me to only be able to transfer songs that I've paid for?

Thanks in advance!

not sure, exactly. probably has something to do with the media collection software that rio bundles with the player. of course, software that companies bundle like this always blow and you're best using something else. the anti-piracy code probably works through the software (or though synchronization with Windows Media Player) - probably does not allow you to share mp3 or upload files that are not in compliance with DRM. If I am not mistaken, you can simply drag & drop your files onto the player, so you can avoid using their software/windows media player/DRM. you'll probably be okay if you just drag/drop...

be sure to read some reviews...visit some gadget forums. I may be wrong...but I think you'll be fine. just read up before you throw down the cash.

a friend of mine had a carbon (pre-janus) & he loved it.

I have an RCA Lyra that's 4G and she don't mind the piracy.

why would a company add anti-piracy feature?

that would probably cause them to sell less units.

makes no sense. probably just some mumbo jumbo.

...they include DRM support so they are "in" with Microsoft and all those who demand such protections (RIAA, etc).
