pasteurization at 140 F
    #5202328 - 01/20/06 10:44 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

Was doing some reading and found this:

[An effective pasteurization will eradicate harmful bacteria, nematodes, insects and fungi. In general a compost substrate temperature of 140o F for 4 hours is adequate for a complete pasteurization.]

[If the compost substrate never rises much above 140o F there is minimum effect on the good microbes...]

http://mushroomspawn.cas.psu.edu/PhaseII.htm

This would be very helpful if true. I have a small convection oven that maxes out at 140 F and if I could avoid baking sh*t in my regular oven  that would be great.

What are you going to be pasturizing? I usually try to stick in the 150-160 range, but i'd think 140 for a long period of time should do it. I'd try it with a small project first and then would proceed on to larger ones if it's a sound technique...

I'd skip the straw and would only use the horse manure. Horse manure has a perfect texture for mushroom growth and mainly consists of straw as it is. I'd think you'd be ok if the time is long enough...

140F is mentioned in TMC, I think even 130F

Hell, I usually only pasteurise for 1 hour at 170.Sometimes only half that. A few times I accidentily let it reach temps of 190, and it always turned out fine. But, I am a guy that still boils his jars even though I have a PC, lol. Im just strange and lucky I guess. Only one contam incident ever, which was a result of letting my cooked manure set unspawned for a week, lol.

Give it a shot. Pasturization can occur in a wide temperature range, from -140 - 180+ I've even read "just make sure it doesn't go over 200". I shoot for 170-175 since I want it done in an hour. Lower temps require longer times. I've read 6 hours at 140, your info states 4 hours. I'd shoot for 5-6 hours just to be cautious... the article you reference states "compost" which has already done part of the job, since you'll be adding uncomposted straw, a little more time wouldn't be a bad idea. (or just go straight poo)

In general, I've found contaminants are less when a lower pasteurization temp is used. At 140F, the fungi spores and mycelium are killed off, but the beneficial bacteria survive. If the center of your substrate can be at 140F for one hour, you're good to go.

Cool, I need to lower my temps then. This would apply to straw as well? It just makes me wonder why higher temps are recommended..

I mixed grain flour with worm castings and straw (pasturized at 175)... it came so close, it was about 80%+ colonized, but there were areas of what I assume was wet spot. It became a good excuse to do an outdoor grow, but I wonder if lower temps would have helped... or does wet spot come from "beneficial" bacteria? the contam in question was a dark grey/graphite color.
