best way to quiet coolmists?

i have 3 impellers running and they make a lot of noise together. i dont want spinning wooshing sounds coming from my closet. Im thingking about trying to put them into something to hold back some noise. the search function has been unproductive.
ive also though about putting an aquarium in the room the closet is in to kind of mix the noise. air purifier. computer. i dont want noise from my closet going into the closet of the person i probably share a thin wall with in my apartment complex. so i need to concentrate on noise reduction in the closet as well.
is there anything i can do to the humidifiers themselves to curb noise? what are suggestions on a conyainer? just polyfill and rubbermades?

This is 'only' an idea, but you could take a cardboard box that your coolmists will fit in, line the inside with that egg-crate foam stuff. (Or just stryofoam egg crates) sanitize it, and put your cool mists inside the box with the outlets coming out.

better to do that sealed between non-porpous surfaces.foam rubber between 2 rubbermades. or if i had a cooler that would be better because the vacuum in the walls would not transfer sound. much in the same way that it does not transfer heat or cold in a thermos. there would be minimal sound emanating before air intakes and shit were cut.

Basically, you cannot silence a coolmist.
I would suggest you remove your set-up from the closet.
Then, ADD a 2 or 3 inch THICK sheet of Styrofoam insulation board to the back wall & sides, to muffle sounds.
Then, re-install your set-up.
A 4X8 sheet of that light-weight & easy to cut Styrofoam insulation board is under $10 at Home Depot, Lowe's & places like that.

i just went in there to fuck with it and was able to cut a lot of sound just by putting my finger on the top part connected to the motor. i think i need to find some way to absorb this vibration. its still kind of loud though but this is about as good as i'll get i feel.

or get a different coolmist, this one is quiet.
Vicks Coolmist Impeller type. Usually $29.95 at Jewel Osco/Walgreens they are quiet, unlike my roommates... very loud.

In studio construction you use this heavy rubber called neoprene between walls and floors, etc. It's the same stuff mouse pads are made from. Just put some mouse pads under each one and it won't transfer to the floor. Whatever else you can get your hands on would be good for the wall. Peg board, plywood, dry wall, anything to add mass to the wall. You can glue it on or even just lean it against the wall. If you've got insulation, or maybe even Poly-Fill, put some of that between the existing wall and a piece of pegboard/plywood/drywall. A mattress would work too. Between isolating it from the floor and adding mass or a wall/insulation/mass sandwich you should be in great shape.

Kilgore (dammit, i love Vonnegut!), i have the SAME problem. the only place i can put my Martha is in a closet in my spare bedroom. the closet wall is my neighbor's closet wall and you CAN hear thru it (not clearly, but still...) i have done a few test runs on my Martha running the coolmist (Sunbeam=LOUD) and my ultrasonic (silent). i wont need to have my Martha running 24/7 (although its ready to go) for another 1-2 weeks. in this time i plan on building a container for my coolmist. my first attempt is gonna be with a cooler lines with recording studio tiles. these tiles are used for soundproofing in recording studios. may use additional polyfil of styrofoam.
another idea is "green board" it's drywall/sheetrock used in bathrooms and kitchens due to the fact that it is WATERPROOF as well as having the side-effect benefit of being 90% soundproof! something to think about. i'll post plans for mine if it works.

just remember not to enclose the whole thing. part of the cool mist is for FAE, you need to give it room to bring in frest o2

haha, I noticed the same thing. I used a 10lb weight (on that spot) and the noise was reduced substantialy. I also tried wrapping a belt around it and adding a block (anything will work) under the belt on that same spot. This worked much better, but it was a PITA adding water. One other thing you can check, make sure the cone that sucks up water is very tightly screwed on. Mine was a bit loose and tightening it up did make a difference, though it's still not "quiet". I'm going mono tub soon and my Vics will be headed to the curb.

I would pull the impeller housing out, hold it in my hand, plug it in & see if it is the fan that is noisy.
If it is not the fan, then it HAS TO BE .....VIBRATION.
The only place vibration could occur is where the fan/impeller housing contacts the reservoir base, it sits on.
To stop that vibration, you could drill another hole in the top of the base, insert a 3/4 inch threaded PVC nipple in the hole, seal that in & screw on a threaded cap.
You would have to unscrew that cap & use a funnel to fill the reservoir.
Then silicone sealer the impeller housing to the base. The silicone would stop the vibration, and dampen any sounds.
That might quite one down.

you could try an ultrasonic. I've got this at walgreens for $29 they are ultra-quiet too

When they get loud, it means the bushings in the motor are worn out, or the motor shaft or impeller is bent. Brand new out of the box they're pretty quiet. It sounds like yours are due to be replaced. I run two of them in my mini greenhouse in my bedroom, and they don't even wake me up at night when they cycle on and off. RR
