vermiculite colonization question
    #519929 - 01/13/02 11:04 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

i was wondering if you are supposed to get mycelium growth over your vermiculite barrier before you birth your cakes. i've read the teks and they say the whole jar should be colonized. oh, and my friend put straight vermiculite on the bottom of the jar for better gas exchange. thanks!!

the top layer of dry vermiculate probably wont be fully colonized because it holds no nutritional value. Primary purpose is to create a contaminate blocker as well as allow gas exchange. Make sure the substrate is colonized fully tho. There might be some growth in the verm, but don't expose uncolonized substrate for contams to infect.

it happens I have had many jars that are somewhat fluffy in the vermiculite layer. Just scrape all of that vermiculite off. The mycelium in there is really non dense and useless.
Its nothing to worry about, if anything its probably a good sign that your cake colonized verfy healthy.
