I used to work at a call centre, doing tech support for Verizon DSL, and there was a guy down the aisle from me with tourettes.
Everyone once in a while he'd yell "WHAT'S UP!" really loud. I guess he could feel it coming so he could hit the mute button on his phone.
Some times he'd also yell "FUCK OFF!", but it was usually "WHAT'S UP!"
I also knew a guy in high school who had tourettes, but he just had kind of a funny twitch.
A friend of my parents is a psychologist, and he was at a conference about tourettes once that was attended by a whole lot of people who suffered from tourettes. He was saying that he felt bad for finding it funny, but when there's an auditorium filled with tourettes sufferers listening to doctors and psychologists giving talks it leads to a little bit of funniness.

One of my friend's has tourettes and every once in a while he rolls his eyes around. It's kind of annoying.
My girlfriend's mom has tourettes. She's learned to control it down to sounding like she's just clearing her throat. She does it pretty often though.

I never understood the causes of tourettes - what an odd affliction. And at the same time, I find it hilarious.

I've just finished watching it, interesting show. I love the bit where Sam explains that how he was once in a French restuarant, gives the waiter the order and then finishes with "now fuck off!"
There was a show I watched on ITV just before about Prada Willis Syndrome (PWS) which is a condition where you're brain never tells you that you are full and so you can't stop eating.

Ive got tourettes, i shake sometimes but usually its just a hand nod, or slapping of the knee.
When i feel a tick, it moves up my spine and starts tickling and tightening in my neck and usually manifests in me shaking my forarm up and down. In rare instances i might stamp my foot. I hope i dont annoy my friends... the younger kids that know me used to think it was caused by eating too much acid. hmm.
Interestingly enough, if i was to see a specialist i would be applicable to apply for canadian medpot.

Are the twitches completely uncontrollable or do you just feel tremendous anxiety until you do the twitch, similar to people with OCD?

When I was in junior high, going to arcade/at the mall, my friends and I would play, "Let's Pretend I Have Tourette's."
Then we'd start yelling nonsense for no reason until our friends ran away because they had no balls.

A lot of people are misinformed about tourettes. It's usually just twitches or ticks. Some people just, say, touch their chin compulsively. Some people say certain things, usually not actually swearing, but sometimes it is.

Well, we dont really know how the brain works, so psychological disorders are hard to explain in detail.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourettes will tell you a little bit about research regarding genetic causes for Tourettes
