terrarium construction
    #512134 - 01/06/02 02:01 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

need input on thoughts of terrarium construction;
eventually, colonized rye will be poured into 8x8" tin trays, and placed on shelves in the terrarium.
rye will be poured 2cm deep, and cased with 2-3cm of vermiculite.
placed into a terrarium with shelves spaced 10" apart is this sufficient height for growth?
humidifier will be in the bottom.
the terrarium is ~6' high, and has a humidifier in the bottom.
what about ventilation? how is this accomplished? or is it needed? the box is sealed with vapor barrier

What temperature should the colonizing spawn jars be left at, as well as what temp should the agar be colonized at? (humidity?)
and what temp should the terrarium be? (humidity = 100% i assume?)

most of your questions can be answered by reading. agar doesn't require humidity to colonize, but i wouldnt put them in scorching, dry deserts either. 2-3cm for your top layer of casing is too thick, and 2cm for your casing layer of rye is too thin, try like 5 cm rye and 1 to 1.5 cm casing.

10" (25.4 cm) should be the spave from the top of your casing layer to the bottom of the shelf above it. i would not totally seal the environment, thus co2 will diffuse out. you may want to put a small fan or two in there to keep the air flow relatively constant so that there is a relative uniform distribution of gasses (h2o vapor is a gas)

ok, thanks for the input. whats the purpose of such a thick rye casing layer? for more flushes?
my top casing layer is definatly too thick then. i'll cut it back to 1cm, and raise the rye layer to approx 4cm, cause the pans themselves are not more than 5.5cm deep.

by the way, the new terrarium will have a fish tank bubbler bringing o2 in, and another at the bottom removing co2.
would you propose these run 24/7? or would much less time exhausting co2 be sufficient?

One fish tank bubbler wouldnt be enogh for a whole shelving unit and theres no need to have one taking air out. There should be a way out for air though, the small airtight imperfections might be enogh. I assume u enclosed the shelfving unit with plastic so its probably not 100% air tight. I am not an expert and I also want to know how to set up something like this. I would think putting the humidifier outside the terr. would be more realistic for air exchange but would it bring in contams?
