I have just begun to build my first terrarium and I had an idea(this does not happen often). Having no expierance doing this I figured I would come on here and see what everyone thought.
The idea of circulating the air always seemed very time consuming in the terrarium, but! what if I installed a CPU fan into the side and then just hooked it upto a timer! At first I thought it was flawless but then I began to wonder if that opening in the side although small would cause a loss of humidity and/or heat, well not just loss; obviously it would, a loss that would would do more harm than good. Let me know if this was a touch of genius or stroke of lunacy...

Some have already done it.
They use a filter patch over the hole.
You might need to convert the computer fan.
Alot of them aren't set up for 120v.
Some people run a car battery charger to them.

it's a good idea, though others have shared your genius-ness.
for the same amount of trouble, just get an aquarium air pump(5$-10$) and make the tubeing run into your terrarium then make a hole (same size as tubeing) at the bottom of the terrarium.

I think a hole the same size as air pump tubing is too small. Also it depends on what kind of tank you have. If you have a glass one I believe the smallest hole places will drill is 1 inch diameter. the average terrarium should have aproximatly 3/4 inch diameter hole to allow c02 to escape. I would go with the air pump.

oh yeah don't forget to get an air stone. if you have the air pump going without being submerged in water have it on approx 50% of the time, but run tests to make sure you aren't losing too much humidity. To remedy this you could buy an air stone for $00.25 and put it in a jar of water. This will actually increase humidity.

this is how i think of it......pumping air out through this small hole (probably 3/8-14in.), can only be exchanged at the rate 'fresh' air is being pumped in. so, you are not losing excess humidity, nor is the hole a very big size to allow for contaminants. this hole (i have 2 because of a dual-output pump) is pretty sufficient. co2 exchange is kept constant along with humidity. having a hole the size of a quarter is overkill.....at least in my opinion.

well my friend had glass so he had to get the 1 inch. mmgg reccomends 3/4 inch. You make a good point, but if your runing it through a jar of water that wil add humidity, and if you have some filter like polyfil or a micron magic filter disk over the hole there is no need to worry about contamination. anyway fully colonized cakes are pretty resistant to contams. even with a 1 inch hole humidity is lost very very slowly. the ultra sonic is only turned on for a few minutes every day or other day. even without turning it on for 3 or more days sometimes the hygrometers shows no change in humidity. It's not really that important. if the hole is too small you can always make it bigger. if it's too small you can drill a smaller hole through a piece of plastic (like a jewel case) and past that over your bigger hole.

now that i think about it...my holes equal up to a little over a half inch.
