shamanic journeying

ive been working on making myself a drum so that i can begin to experiment with shamanic jourenys. i couldnt find any mp3s anywhere on the internet, and making the drum seems to be a good way to focus my attention on the goal. does anyone here have experiences with journeying via a drum or rattle, specifically without the aid of psychedelics? im very interested in the technique and the experience, thanks.

IVe recently seen a documentary about it.
3 different kinds of ritual were mentioned:
the traditional one where the shamans just sit there and drum.
the slightly more modern one were people go into caves and temples with nice accoustics and the one with the headhones.

the headphones one is simple a tone in one ear and a slightly different tone in the other, putting the sound slightly off center stereo wise.

the temple one works with the same thing u get when u blow on a bottle.
in the docu there was a temple with a narrow passage leading up to a large chamber. one dude would sit at one end and drum and the other at the chamber was registering sounds below the human hearing range
that were louder then a rock concert.
the dude just sat there and the sound simply caused the effect.

nowhere in the docu was there any mention of any effort on the part of the shaman, no meditation or anything like that was ever mentioned.

all of the ritual around it seems to be about the psychology of the participants.
for instance the shaman is healing someone, so he writes the apropriate symbols, makes sand drawings or whatever, but essentialy expresses a set of archtypes for the patient to identify with and stuff like that.

Stanislav Grof has written about a neo-shamanic technique without psychedelics and using drum rattle and especially breathing to access altered states. I have his book The Adventure of Self-Discovery, which could be a place to start. He used psychedelics until they became illegal and developed his current technique. He did say that psychedelics were the most powerful.
