Fungi Assisted Decomposing Steel

I am currently working a very large project involving post tensioned cables. I was doing some research on various modes of failue and ran across this.

If I'm reading this right the fungi is not directly decomposing the metal but a chemical reaction is caused by the acids present in the fungi's by-products from decomposing hydrocarbons, which in this case, are present in the lubricants used to prevent corrosion in the first place.
