Making a laminar flow hood
    #507480 - 01/02/02 08:39 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I want to assemble a flow hood. I won't skimp on the most important items such as the blower/motor and HEPA filter(s).

Brief as possible, I want all the quality and benefit of a factory produced model, but don't mind making it myself; so I can end up with what I want--for the price of parts.

How much money am I looking at here? I've done searches on Mycotopia, The Shroomery, and most major search engines.

My main concerns are:
1. which companies should I be looking to for the highest quality parts, (the motor, the special casing materials, the filters, and anything else) and;
2. are there any blueprints/plans out there to make my task as painless as possible.

Could someone with experience in this matter give me some advice?

Thanks!

thanks, Anno.

I'm wondering if I'm going to have to buy the supplies online.

I went to a Loews and a Home Depot today looking for either the blower motor or HEPA filters. No go. Maybe an HVAC type of supply house would have the motor.

Now. . the only time I've heard a motor that I think might be the same type is one of those blower units they sit on newly shampooed carpet to speed the drying process. Those fuckers are LOUD!!

Is that the same motor that would be sitting atop my flow hood?

I you want a blower at say 250 cfm your best bet is a (hydroponic) grow shop. There guaranteed to have one in stock.Hepa filters are a little harder to find but im sure the best place to find them is online.I would look at a company that sells flow hoods for a hepa....they are pricey!!Good luck and also ANNO that link is bad for mycotopia...doesnt even show up....a bunch of there stuff dont work on that site...Peace out

the link works for me....
to obtain a good hepa filter check www.filtersrx.com (cheaper, i bought mine from them) or www.fungi.com, more expensive but you get a scanned filter which is accurately tested.
hey i bought a 24x12x6, but if i were in your place i'd order a custom sized 28x18x6, or even better a 32x24x6.

yep, squirrel cage fans are crazy noisy.
in my case, i didnt want the neighbors thinking i was designing turbo jet engines, so i decieded to go to walmart, and bought a 59.99 (can) hepa/ionizer unit, and built this into the side of my tupperware glovebox.

Re: Making a laminar flow hood-Sheet metal? [Re: ChangLee]
    #563823 - 02/26/02 01:12 PM (22 years, 26 days ago)

could you use sheetmetal to make the body? i have a shop class with a spot welder and sheet metal benders. do you know how much sheet metal costs? hook it up to a wally world holmes and drop in some plexiglass from home dopot, caulk it, $5 florescent and could be good to go.
