So I'm growing a San Pedro cactus...
    #5074213 - 12/17/05 02:00 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

And I transplanted it to a larger pot around the beginning of the month. I often see this in pictures of San Pedro, but I've never known how it happens. How do you make it so the cactus forks into two? If you just cut it, doesn't the cactus regrow straight up again? How could I go about forking it in the future?
Here's my cactus:

By the way, it was in way too small of a pot before, so it probably looks strange due to that. It nearly had the same volume of soil in the pot as a cereal bowl. 'Tis amazing it has gotten to the current height.

The color doesn't look too healthy...

anyway... To "fork it" you'd most likely need to cut it. but theres no telling if more than one pup will sprout from the top. could just be one, and things won't have changed much. More pups will eventually come from the base as the cactus gets older.

This should probably go in the garden forum.

Well, I'm pretty much a cactus/plant noob in general. I bought it at a yard sale and it was in a tiny pot in direct sunlight for far too long. Before this, it was sunburned. I wanna get a better picture. Do you guys have any tips on making it a little bit more healthy?

I'd change the soil, plant it deeper and find a window that it enjoys (south or maybe east?). Get some nutrients for it and just give it some time. All the recommendations I can really think of.

nice find  i cut a p torch and rooted the top and it has a good pup coming from the stump ill try and get a pic and post (if i can find my camera and cord)'
it does look like it needs some care.
i would cut it about the first bend at the top and root that then cut again to make a nice little stump to make pups for you, then do an extraction on the rest.

It'll probably look like this after you cut it. Sometimes you'll only get one pup, most of the times you'll get two. I'd wait until it gets healthier before you do anything to it though.

I suggest you invest in a book by K. Trout called

Trout's Notes on "San Pedro & related Trichocereus species"

there are 100's and probably 1000's of unique clones which could be called San Pedro.

Give it some time to get in better health. I've read that generally cactus pup at the highest areole after the cut, so with a cactus crooked like this one seems to be (no offense, there's nothing wrong with crooked cactus), it might be hard to get it to give two pups at once. Don't let that discourage you, because i'm not sure how true this is, just what i've read. Unless you've got it under lights, you may want to wait until spring when it starts growing more again, generally cactus don't grow much in the winter. Be sure and root and plant the part you cut off so that you now have two instead of one.
