Senate Passes Patriot Act Extension
AP WASHINGTON Dec 21, 2005 ? The Senate passed a six-month extension of the USA Patriot Act late Wednesday night, hoping to avoid the expiration of law enforcement powers deemed vital in the war on terror.
Approval came on a voice vote, and cleared the way for a final vote in the House.
Several provisions in the current law expire Dec. 31, and President Bush has called repeatedly for new legislation.

Renewal of anti-terror law blocked in Senate Yahoo News
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, demanding increased protection of civil liberties, defied President George W. Bush on Friday and blocked legislation to renew the USA Patriot Act, a centerpiece of his war on terrorism. On a Senate vote of 52-47, mostly Republican backers of the measure fell eight short of the needed 60 to end debate and move to passage of the legislation.

hell yeaz. But really, was the patriot act so evil.I mean only if you break the law. for us normal law abiding shroomerites it was no big deal, right? think of all the thousands that are now going subsequently die in a heinous act of human delusion.
The terror will reign rampant on the masses.
does this mean I can resume my talks about throwing baseballs over the government.

Oh sure, it's OK if they have the power to violate our Constitutional rights as long as they don't. Thats the kind of mindset I'd expect in ignorant sheep Americans, not a member of the Shroomery community.
Yes, our civil liberties have been protected and the Patriot Act will not be renewed. So this means anticipate the worst terrorist attack against the American people to date? Yeah, sure buddy.

"We have more to fear from terrorism than we do from this Patriot Act." Bill Frist
I have mixed emotions about the Patriot Act. On one hand I see it is good to help prevent terrorism in this country. On another hand I would be very angry if I felt my privacy and civil liberties were violated by this bill at some point in the future.

I personaly didn't think most of the Patriotic Act was that bad. I guess if there IS a terrorist attack though the appropriate people will feel like shit so whatever. It's fine if they get rid of it, but if it turns out that we actually needed it and the interest groups are wrong then heads should roll.

So if one were to ask: "How many attacks the patriot act has prevented"
Would the answer be: "Sorry it's classified"??

It all comes down to one question.
Do you want police to stop crime before it happens or wait till bad people do very bad things?
Parts of the patriot act are just pure bull shit and open doors to great injustice. Much of it just cuts right through all the bull shit and lets the cops be cops.
Because of this several people have been arrested and/or deported without actualy doing anything wrong. Is it wrong to punnish a person if you know they are going to blow up a bridge but havnt done it yet?

Yes. How the fuck can you justify charging someone for wanting to do something?
You know how many times I have thought..."man, I'd like to kick the shit out of that guy?"...but never actually done it...
So should I be charged with a crime for fantasizing about assault?

"Conspiracy to....." is a rather oft used charge. As to deportation, any illegal is subject to immediate deportation and legals need to behave. Felony conviction and you are out. Telling someone you are going to kick his ass is assault. Doing it is battery. Other threats are extortion and making terrorist threats. I'm sure there are several more examples. Watch your mouth. You're not in high school anymore.

I think that most of the patriot act was dangerous and capable of abuse, however I think that some provisions were good and simply common sense. We now know that some investigative rules prevented law enforcement from working together prior to 9/11. I think we also know that there is no compromise in Washington and it is all or nothing so I would rather have nothing than make the entire patriot act permanent. An intelligent evaluation and modification of the law would benefit all of us, but we will end up getting screwed over by partisan politics as it has always been.

For those who think the Patriot Act was "alright" (or something along those lines), and that it would help against terrorism: that is some of the most jaded opinion I have ever heard.
First of all, you need to ask yourself what a terrorist is, and who the real terrorists are.
Second of all, you need to look at how the Patriot Act defines a terrorist. Now this isn't word for word, but from what I have seen, according the Patriot Act, a terrorist is any individual who commits an illegal act as decided by those in power. Get busted for smoking a doob? You're a terrorist. Shoplift a dvd? You're a terrorist. The Patriot Act is is the biggest joke out there for democracy, if anything it will only bring about a militarized police state. Yay, then we can stop those evil terrorists!
Security and freedom do not go hand-in-hand; they are not bed-fellows. Whenever security is increased, freedom is decreased.

Are there even any known abuses of the Patriot act yet?

When did the shroomery suddenly become the haven of Patriot Act supporters? Seriously, the shroomery I remember would have had a grand old party at this announcement.
*sigh* I'm getting old.
